Drewfus.........I TURNED UP the volume.....ahh........The Spencer Davis Group......great Dragfest video..........I was only 12 & too young to go.......andyd.

 

The first video is actually from the Gawler Belt where single lane sprints were run prior to the South Australian Hot Rod Association establishing the first two lane strip at Brooksfield which was just a little further north and west of Gawler.

I was there , & as a 14 year old the Yellow fang certainly left a huge impression on me. Thanks for the cool vids Drewfus.

I really like this car, this is what I want my '47 to end up looking like.

 

The whole dragfest deal appears to have been quite a gamechanger for Australian hot rodding and drag racing, having seen a lot of photo's since, especially on social media. The yellow fang would have been quite a spectacle to see, especially given the timeframe of drag racing here in Oz.

 

You gotta love the video with Mum bringing the tea and bikkies down to the shed and seeing what the young fella's up to. Light up a ciggie and stand back and suss out the job. Priceless!

 

I have to agree that the 1966 Dragfest had a huge impression on me as a young 12 yo.
Yellow Fang was on display at Miranda Fair and I begged Dad to take us to Castlereagh which he did ...... he then paid the ultimate price of losing his garage space to drag cars construction for the next 13+ years. Thanks Dad.

If you guye's don't mind, on the 66 DRAG FEST, Three 17 year old mates jumped in a 1948 10hp Anglia at Beralla Sydney at 5pm and held it flat, 18 hours later we arrived at Surfers Parradise, had a swim, and went to the Drag Strip," when the SHOW was over we headed home, 22 hours later, just had to do it,! that Anglia became the "Hombre" still competative nostalgia car. hope you dont mind my input

Diggin' the grubby Sloper with red wheels and flames .

 

Gorgeous cars that really evoke the time period. And beautiful photography. Almost every car has great proportions. Love the swoopy customs and the trad hotrods. I wonder how the crazy show cars of the 50's and 60's have evolved. Any picture comparisons of them then and now? Great thread!

 

Unfortunately not many survived, most of the customs got lost & most of the Hot Rods were turned into Street Rods in the 70's & 80's . There are a few exceptions but they are rare. Here is a pair that were spared the billet curse. There are other hot rods that are getting restored but customs of that era don't seem to exsist.

 

Although there were a number of US based Customs built in Oz in the 60's such as Dave Andrews Customline the vast majority of Oz Customs were based upon Oz Holdens with a few Falcons & Valiants thrown in.........and over the years there seems that up until fairly recently, say until the last 15-20 yrs, no one really appreciated proper customised Oz cars........Ray Sperottos FJ Holden or Len Fenechs FJ Holden were the equal of any Merc but because they were not US sourced it seems they were not the same...........a pity.........I know the crap my brother received with his customised 51 Chev from a couple of Pre 48 Hot Rod Clubs made him drop out of hot rodding in the mid 1970's..........andyd
