  4. I know Zocchi's "Cool '50" is different... is the first photo the same car as the hardtopped one?

It looked lower in the rear without the skirts. I hope it's temporarily raised up in that 3rd photo.

  5. In the 80s there were at least three Mercs that were red over white separated by Riviera trim. I wrote about the trio in the "What Ever Happened To..........?" thread, remember @Sancho?

The Merc that isn't hard topped belonged to Robert Earl Jones Sr. from Bakersfield, California (W.E.H.T. #95). The car was built in the mid-west and was sold to Mr. Jones in California. If memory serves, it was built in Iowa.

The hard topped Merc belonged to Bob McQualdy from Decatur, Illinois (W.E.H.T. #94). I think Bob had air shocks on the rear to raise it in order to haul a little trailer. I think it was on the '87 Leadsled Spectacular video from Springfield, Illinois where the car was seen pulling a little trailer.

Here's the link to the red with white triplet Mercs if you wanted to check it out again. E

I prefer '35-'54 custom cars with skirts, especially Mercurys and Shoebox Fords. I think as a mild custom my '59 Thunderbird looks good without skirts. It gives it a light and agile look. Eventually I'll probably run skirts on it... Maybe. But I tend to like the heavy sled look for the earlier cars...

I see that the post i quoted was from 2015, and normally i wldnt do that, but the pics posted from this message PROVE that skirts aren't necessary. (Some cars look good w them., but damn, not a single one of those cars is missing anything. )

So, short answer, they are NOT always required. Ymmv, and some cars DO look a lil off without... but none of these pictured.

    Thanks.

Heres my 49 Tudor conversion i think no skirts looks ten times better vs. skirts... everyone and their brother runs skirts on a merc.

  18. You must really dislike Customs, maybe you should go back to the Hot Rod forum.

To me skirts usually finish off and make a custom pop. Some without are bitchin also but usually skirts are a must have.

Skirts IMHO do have their place such as 49-51 Merc's and some others. But again in just my opinion, and just generally speaking I prefer no skirts. How ever it really boils down to your personal taste, so do it your way but DO take in us Hot Rod guys thoughts as we also appreciate your great custom as much as any of you do our rides.

I think it depends on what your design is and what you like. I personally like skirts on sleds but not all customs. I would never put skirts on a 57 chevy but to me any lead sled or chop top from 53 or so back needs them.
