  2. I can remember my dad driving me to school occasionally. I'd ask him to drop me off a block away so no one would see the uncool '49 Plymouth. 20 years later I was driving one with a SBC and it was cool. Go figure.

I have a friend who bought a '53 Dodge Cranbrook (?) 4 door a few years back. He lowered it, shave the handles and painted it grey with a white top. It's a damn cool car! And IIRC he had less than $3k into it!

Just a beater Thunderbird with custom exhaust and wheels... But I love this car. Squarebirds are very attainable and it's the BEST CRUISING old car I've ever driven. I'll never sell it because it's such a good sounding, good driving machine. And I don't have too much into it. I do hope to dress it up with new paint and interior in the next few years. I thought this Stude Coupe would have made a bitchin hot rod, or at least a great welding project. It was only $600 ( I think), had all the missing pieces. I didn’t call in time, and our housing situation is unstable at best, so I have to be careful about new acquisitions.

(I think they were wrong about the year)

I spend most of my time on the 390 and dual quads in my more door pos, but I really love this car. (Yes, that’s a roof rack and plywood on the top, It’s my DD and I’m a carpenter, so it’s expected to do Home Depot runs....)

Not that it's an ugly car, but you never saw them customized when they were common . You never see them at all anymore, especially custom.

This isn't the coolest body style but this has to be one of the best looking one of it's kind.

Yes..that's a darn nice custom right there...ribbed bumpers are the finishing touch. These mopars are inexpensive...front suspension is boat like ...easy to relocate shock upper mounts...

A friend of mine bought one of these for a few hundred bucks about 10 years ago.

    upload_2018-7-27_0-37-23.jpeg

He painted it flat black with green scallops, lowered it, and put on some kind of cool hubcaps. When I saw it I laughed like hell. A Mercury custom! This was the look they were after in the fifties. He drove it around for a couple of summers, had more fun than anybody then sold it. This was a guy who worked out of a little shop behind the house and never had much dough but always seemed to come up with a cool car when he wanted to.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind?

The car really came to life when it was lowered and painted. The top comes pre chopped and it had a long low look. If you saw it you would see what I mean. Maybe someone with photoshop talent could eliminate the vinyl top, lower it, give it a cool paint job and some wheels and tires and you would see it.

Is this what you were looking for? Amateur builds custom out of junker Kaiser 4 door with the help of Gene Winfield.

1941 Ford 1.5 ton I bought out of an former orchard in San Jose for $300. The farmers shortened an old Army truck, I looped off a bit more to bring it down to short bed length. Another $250 parts 1947 truck netted me a perfect cab I swapped onto the truck.

I was able to get the flathead fired up after sitting since 1970.

Free and cheap parts have gotten it to where it's at now. A buddy hooked me up with a full floating Dana 60 with a limited slip. Swapped the mondo front axle for a setup from a 1948-1952 F3 truck to keep the 8 lugs all around bartering parts. A buddy even hooked me up with a 1950-1952 F1 short bed.

Found an NOS grill at Turlock for $80. I even found a pair of rear fenders for it in San Mateo for $100.

The front fenders are pretty hammered, I'm going to try to save them but anything that bolts on is fair game.

  25. 50's 4 door hardtops. More affordable, and if you roll all the windows down and squint it can be mistaken for a two door. This is my current ride, 56 Buick Super

Nice, I like 4 doors more and more all the time, a lot of the time better than the same style 2 door just because....
Think Im figuring out Im more of a underdog 4 door guy the older I get, It could be the older I get the more of a "old mans car" guy I become:D

Put chrome reverse wheels on it and have it be the dark blue/green color they where and you have my first car in 1971 when I was 16. 389, factory dual exhaust with a couple Walker continental glass packs and posi rear end Made her quite a sleeper! Great car and great memories. Have owned a lot of belly button cars but have always had a soft spot for the odd bodies. Larry
