To remove the box and steering shaft that way, you would have to pull the steering wheel, loosen the steering column tube at the steering box and detach from the dash board, probably pull the floor cover from around the column, and then you likely could maneuver the steering box and shaft out the bottom. But by the time you have done all that, removing from inside the car would just about the same work only not laying on your back or working overhead on a lift to drop the box/column.

  3. Food for thought. I was working on a 53 Lincoln this past winter and removing the steering box / column assy. would have had to be from the inside. It had a huge power steering box and there was no room for removal unless the LH exh. manifold was removed (at least).

A non power steering box and column may be able to be removed from underneath. I know that in my younger days I removed the box and column from more than 1 mid 50s Ford from underneath.

the reason i want to remove it from the bottom is because the car has an under dash air cond. & i don,t want to move it

Okay.....I understand.....but the process I described in post #2 would still apply due to the steering shaft being part of the worm gear in the box. It will be much easier to pull the steering gear and shaft with the column tube removed, or at the very least, loosened from the box, so the shaft can drop out the bottom without the column tube attached.

Hope the job goes smoothly and you get it road ready soon. Let us know how it turns out and especially if recommendations were in error.
