Technical 1932 Ford 5w coupe roof insert...How I did it.

I have an old hot rod 32 5w coupe...but it has felt more like a roadster for a while because I haven't known what to do with the roof insert. There was no good information on the internet that I could find on how to do the job and I was worried particularly about being able to stretch the vinyl properly. I always just put it off and figured I'd pay someone else to do it. Well, I finally just decided to do it like everything else...just work my way through it how it makes sense in my mind. I made a video covering the process. Here's the end result below. ***Be sure to click HD in the settings so you get the full high quality video***

Nice job, I don’t own a car like this but was curious how you were going to do this job. Great how to video, it turned out well and hopefully others will be able to use it.

  3. Awesome work and video!!! I just did my sedan with some help from a friend. I did have to bend/shape all the trim. The original trim was bad so I bought new pieces. They were extruded aluminum. Thanks for sharing.

Nice! I was bummed when you fast forwarded after you fired up the flatty. Other than that, great video.

Good job on fixing that hole in the roof. I own the '34 you parked next to at the Nashville Red Roof Inn.

Thanks, Do you have a pic of the aluminum pieces? That'd be interesting to see. An instagram user in Australia shared a pic of his Aussie 32 with aluminum tack strip and I'd never seen it before...It looked like it had countersunk holes for screws (no nails) and had a smooth rounded profile with no recess for seal...actually a more durable design I think.

Awesome job. Great video. This will help lots of folk get the confidence to do it themselves.
I wish we could get a repro tack strip for an original 32 3W.
The way you describe is pretty much how Julianos describe with the 2x4 frame. We did not have an original tack strip for our 3W , Julianos say “ drill holes and pop rivet their aluminium cover trim to roof 1/2” out” woah that wasn’t going to happen. We felt their cover stip was a little pronounced . Despite using copious amounts of sealer it still has a small leak.

Thank you so much for taking the time to document this procedure. You have helped a lot of people. I have a "32 5W as well and this will definitely come in handy!

UPAC have tack strips for 32-5 windows. I got mine from them. Not sure on cost in US$ but it was lots of Aussie$$$
Got the rubber strip to suit from Macs. Are 3 windows different to 5 W's?
And I agree with Kiwi4d that the Julianos tack strip/sealing strip is just too big plus they wouldn't their kit to Oz.

Excellent job on the insert. Excellent video!
Awesome car! Thanks for doing the video. I'm not sure which way I'm going on my 30 Tudor (metal or fabric) but if I go fabric this vid gave me more confidence to do it.

  18. Yep, here's a pic of the trim imstalled. I fit it to the curves, primed and painted it before installing. It's kinda of a good deal like the original but aluminum rather that steel. The rubber seal goes in real easy (reward for having to bend the strips). I did nail mine down but could have used screws if wanted to. 013.jpg

I like it.. I like it more that you didn't fill in the roof with a metal insert....

That was a great video, I have a 28 sedan and been wondering the same thing on what to do. I could use some info on where to get a kit, the alum sounds like the best choice. I've found Juliano's, who else out there makes a kit? Also, do you have any noise from wind going with the cloth top?
