Everyone who has an old car should be proud for many reasons, but is it just me or do other people find it amazing you see a rod run, car show, etc. and in the mix will be some 2000 or newer car? Why do people do that? Curious.
Old cars are a part of history, maybe something that took incredible amount of time and money restoring, then you see a 2018 xxxxxxx, something you see in any new car showroom parked beside it. Yuk!

Yep. What gets me is the way the owners sit next to their new cars with the hood open like they built it themselves.

  3. I think you're supposed to stop on the way to the show and put a K&N filter on it or something. Then polish it all day.

That bugs me too. On Memorial Day weekend I had the '62 in a show at a local nearby casino. My pops showed up and I strolled around with him. He's 77 now and says what's on his mind. We walked by a group of new Mopar muscle cars and SUVs. We were actually under their canopy catching a minute of shade when my dad blurts out - "What the hell are all these new cars here for??" They just kinda looked at him... no one said anything.

    I loved it...

Guilty as charged. I've taken all three of these to cruise-ins

I wholeheartedly agree when choosing what shows you should or should not bring to a show. I'm not gonna bring my late(er) model BMW to a hot rod run. Nor am I going to bring my '39 Ford to an import car event.

    But...

To play devil's advocate, when this picture was taken in 1954, the majority of the cars there were less than a decade old:

I haven't been to a "trophy" show in a long long time, but remember twice about 20 years ago at local shows that a brand new car got "Best in Show" trophy. No wonder; these cars probably didn't have 1K miles on them and were perfectly clean/unscratched.

I too am not interested in seeing a 2016 Honda, etc. You see those every day in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

The last NSRA show I went to was the last one before they changed the cut-off year. If I wanted to see a Fox bodied Mustang making lots of noise and disturbing the peace all I would have to do is to go into town any Saturday evening. Don't need to drive several hundred miles and pay motel/meal bills to see that.

That's true. However, using the H.A.M.B. cutoff of mid 60's our cars are over 50 years old. In 1954 how many 50 year old cars were there?

There's no deep meaning answer. Let's just say all on 'em are performance machines with three pedals.

What I'm saying is that in our period of interest here on the HAMB, guys had pride in their two-year-old cars. So, I'm not gonna shit all over someone who has pride in their 2016 Challenger, even if its not my cup-o-tea. Unless they show up to a show advertised as a traditional hot rod event...

  13. But the cars in the photo were customs and certainly fit in well with hot rods. HRP

That's a true enough statement but look at the cars. They are chopped, sectioned, nosed, decked, cut, bent, beat, and who knows what else was done.
I am not a fan of rat rods and fake patina but I do appreciate the workmanship and talent it takes to build one. I love to see old cars that have been resurrected and are now just plain bitchin because of someone's hard work and busted knuckles. I like to see flawed paint jobs done by young kids who just learned how to spray.
I enjoy talking to guys who have made their dream car in their garage piece by piece as money allowed.

What I don't like or understand why you would purchase a new car, have it detailed, and enter it in a show. And why raise the hood? There is nothing to show but a plastic cover and miscellaneous stuff. I wonder why they don't put their payment book or lease agreement on display too.
And finally, at the end of the show, all the old guys with blowers, healthy motors, nice paint, carson tops, and so on just drive away and the new guys in new cars peel out, miss a shift, and embarrass themselves.

    Sorry, didn't mean to ramble.

We went through this at our local Lion's Club cruise-in a few years ago. We decided to use the 25 year and older cut off to register and had a separate parking area for the newer cars. I got tired of the new car guys crying real quick cause they were not in the running for the trophies. We had a on the spot members meeting and I finally told them that they knew the rules we had set up when they come in and if they didn't like it to get the hell out of dodge. We also set up out events to let the car owners be the judges, as in each owner got a slip with the different classes(best GM, best Ford, best Mopar etc.) so all they had to do was vote by the car number. Some people liked it, some didn't. Still had complaints, you can never make every one happy. We had so many hassles that the club no longer puts on any shows. As for me, the only places I take a car to these days are the ones where a bunch of like minded folks get together at a park or ice cream place and shoot the shit and look at the cars and have a good time. No trophies, plaques, door prizes, just laid back fun.

  16. Just a week ago we went to a new show and I parked my old beater between a new Challenger and a new Corvette, both had their hoods up and the were proudly sitting beside their pride & joy, I on the other hand didn't open my hood, heck I didn't even wash it. :D

After 20 minutes or so the Corvette guy told me people were not paying his car any attention but seem to be more interested in my car.

I told him I didn't know,I had been at the restaurant eating and looking at the cars that interested me,he then ask me what I thought about his car,I told him it was nice if you like new cars but anyone can go to their local Chevrolet dealership and look at new Corvettes.

Within a couple of minutes he cranked up and drove off,a guy in a 61 Ford truck pulled in next to me and I felt right at home. HRP

  17. I never got that either, but to each their own I guess. I'd be the guy with a trailer on behind setting up in the swap and not even washing the car for the trip.

  18. Cruise Nights - Perfectly acceptable
Car Shows - Pretty dumb unless there's a class for late models.

All those late model owners have done is demonstrate their ability to make monthly car payments..... they do not belong at shows in stock form. Chop channel and or section them add some custom paint..... then they can bring them

changing world - plus, those that are running most shows have to bring enough people/cars to cover overhead and some extra as profit or donation to fund raiser - many times that means opening up to wide range of years & types - the Goodguys, and others, are raising normal day entries year cut off and Sundays open to anything American made - pre-72 show/cruise can bring a good turn out - the biggest problem/disappointment I see is that show/cruises do not do enough promotion - only placing flyers in cars at a show/cruise and just ads in car event mags/sites is not the total answer - got to get word out to general public - have good size signs along streets saying car show/cruise so that people driving by will know what is going on and maybe draw them in - event operator can have cut off/limits of any type that they want - same as attending shows that has rides that you truly like - enjoy the ride to/from event

We have two cruise ins this week locally,
Friday night is Harvest Days Cruise in Battle Ground and has a 1988 cut off date (1988? I have no idea where that cut off date came from but likely the show administrator owns a fox body mustang) but the point is there will be no new challengers or vettes rolling by.

Saturday night is Cruse the 'Couve downtown in the gut. If it is street legal it is allowed. Monster trucks, brand new cars, crotch rockets, tuners, etc. What a stupid way to spend a summers evening.

I bet ya cant guess which one I am attending and which I aint.

  24. I am guessing it's just a nice even number. Entered vehicles are all at least 30 years old.
Damn, hard to believe that 1988 was 30 years ago......

  25. My o/t 1969 car has all the same mechanicals(and just about as pretty) as a pre 1965 HAMB friendly car.
I'm sure it is to eliminate the Muscle Cars.
New cars at car shows will always be a thorn in my side.
Eventually my o/t car will be allowed to most shows, check out the Goodguys shows.
Probably not on the HAMB though, far from traditional 60's, but you never know.
    Never say never.

Another U.K. story. In 1985, while stationed in England, I restored a 1965 Mini Van using a new body shell, doors, sub frames, etc., in fact the only original parts were the engine Id plate, rear van door hinges and the rear wiring harness. I built the engine and transmission and turned every bolt on the car. I did everything except paint it. The first show I entered I was parked next to a 1959 restored Mini. He won, and I was alright with it because in reality my car was brand new and his was original. I should have been in a different class. In 1983 I was showing a brand new 1983 Mini that after getting it home from the dealer, I changed nearly everything on it. Still it was a new car and hard to compete against the older ones even though they all looked the same. Again, that was alright. I go to shows to see cars and talk to people. A trophy is a fringe benefit.

Lately, because my classics are not running, I have been showing my 2016 F150. It's not stock (well, the engine is), but I've done a lot of modifications to the appearance. It's not like every other F150 you see and it gets some attention. I've gotten a couple of trophies but don't get excited if I don’t win anything.

Almost all shows I do are for charities, so if I or other non-HAMB/OT/new cars did not enter, less money would be raised. And if the weather is bad at least there will be some cars to show up, because around here, people don't want to get their classics wet. I always drove my '50 Ford Tudor rain or shine so when the weather was bad, I usually got a trophy because the nice cars stayed home.

One of the reasons new Mustangs, Camaros, etc. win is because they come as groups/clubs and vote for each other. That's a whole different can of worms.

And if you don't like certain vehicles, new or otherwise, do like me and keep on walking til you come to a real gasser or deuce coupe. Or whatever floats your boat.

  27. Parked my ride at an in door show this winter. Across from a new Lamborghini and a shop the builds newer cars Had a great time. They bought dinner that night. I will probably do some metal work for them in the future
I will have to admit that being a shop teacher gives you another perspective. These are not just cars but opportunities for student employment.
Moral of the story....... all types of cars are great ways to meet new friends.

Plus, I feel my old ride can hold its own parked next to anything

I have cut way back on car shows for several reasons, but this is one of them...
If the show is advertised a Classic Cars, as well as a year stated, such as 1967 or earlier, I am interested... If not so stated, depends on if any of my friends are going ... :)

  29. several years ago, 2 of my sons were in a car club, The Road Agents, the club put on a show that did not allow billet, monochromatic paint jobs, just real hot rods, and customs. This was stated in the flyers for the show. several o/t cars showed up, and were denied entrance, although 1 guy took his car home, changed his wheels, and was admitted to the show. The guys that pissed and moaned had a choice, park outside the gate, or go away. You don't take a Mustang to a Corvette show.

We don't understand why they would bring a brand new car to a car show.

They don't understand why we'd bring an old pile of shit to a car show.

Same as 1965. And yet, the world continues to turn...
