Art & Inspiration Tag lights - lets see what your using

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 16, 2018.

  1. Tag lights are requirement ans we all have to have one on our cars,be it Rod or Custom so what are you using? stock or something one off? HRP

On my Deuce sedan I stuck with Henry's original design,it's simple and it works as well now as it did in 1932.

On the Ranch Wagon I also went with the stock tail light,I really like the way the tail light swivels to make the tag visible when the tail gate is open. HRP

HRP, I used a Lucas unit I found on line. It has two plate markers and a reverse light in it.

Stainless steel, look kinda vintage and required a backing plate to attach the light and plate to the spreader. I'm happy with the style of it and how it fits the frame.

    It is definitely bright!

  4. OK, so maybe this isn't quite 'vintage'.... I tried for a vintage look. My YOM plate was a bit moth-eaten around the edges and all the original mounting holes were damaged, so I couldn't find anything in the aftermarket that would conceal that (and too cheap to buy a better plate). Plus any add-on plate light would stick up rather high and possibly be subject to damage when getting stuff out of the trunk. So I did this....

Rear plate 1.jpg Rear plate 2.jpg
Hand-machined in aluminum by me out of two pieces of 3/8" plate and one piece of 5/8" x 2" bar stock, with a lexan window cover. By the time I was done, there was over forty separate pieces/screws. All hardware is on the back or inside. Fully sealed against weather, with a vent to allow condensation to escape. For the light, I copied the design off a 'billet' frame including the lens (which turned out to be the hardest part to make).

And no, the plate isn't off center in the frame; the numbers were stamped off center....

No pics, but I've got a simple rectangular 3 led chrome light screwed to a plastic chrome plate frame. Looks like it was made that way.

Was going to show my light but robracer1 beat me to it. Great light and since it is so cheap, I use them on the license plate, the plate on my teardrop, and 4 of them as courtesy lights inside the car.

I'm using a 1928 Douglas motorbike taillight. Acts a a third brake light/marker light as well as lighting up the tag.

Speaking of Lucas lights, I've always liked the "D" type, or ST51:
They go one either side of a wide, flat plate.

  21. Mounted on both sides of the tag would give you brake lights also. HRP

In the past when mounting a light assembly isn't feasible I've used license plate bolts with built in lights in them. A cheap and easy fix.

I have the same unit, I'm told they are early Jaguar. Here it is in an early mockup. The bulbs are 6v, did you change yours? DSC00026.JPG
