1961-62 street roadster for Bonneville Speed Week.

    Hello,

Since Bonneville is upon us August 11-17th, the flurry of getting the race cars ready is down to the wire. My brother and I have always wanted to build a roadster or coupe for Bonneville’s all out runs. The images can live on in our hearts and minds. A lowered, stock bodied 1932 steel roadster with the requisite roll bar, Naugahyde tarp, and Moon Discs. A roadster driveable on the street with headers and mufflers tucked in underneath.

Our all-out runs were made in the 1958 Impala on the famed Westminster Blvd night drags location. It was almost 2 miles of a straight empty, deserted roadway with a ¼ mile marked off for usage. (no one to disturb, except for bullets & mortar shells.) In reading about the ½ mile drags at Riverside Raceway, we thought it would be fun to do it locally.

Fast full throttle runs of ¼, ½, and even a full mile with a mile of shut off area before another intersection was calling. It was made for this teenage escapade, with no housing, anywhere nearby. So, practice runs were made with different gearing for the longer runs.

Our local, Long Beach, full throttle raceway at night was the Terminal Island Freeway behind our old house on the farthest reaches, West, of Long Beach. It was also about 2 miles long and deserted at night. The only problem was a couple of rows of houses a block to the East.

It did happen, but, the LB Police were well aware of the 11pm -3am shenanigans by the local teenagers. So, caution was the mode of the late night, especially after a Saturday night at nearby Lions Dragstrip activities.

Our Bonneville street roadster version would be a 283 SBC with a 671 in the BSTR class, vintage, of course. This year, with a new 383 SBC + 671, we would ONLY have to go 242 mph to get the record and get into the exclusive 200 mph club. A possibility? Yes, because it is on paper only.

    Jnaki

To be politically correct with safety: A full roll cage, aluminum tarp and parachute was added for protection.

  12. Great show today!!

I finally have some stuff to share...

Hopefully, you have been following John Mullen’s grass-roots 640 XO/PP build. John and crew have knocked this unibody race truck, “the Virginia H.A.M.B. Special”, outa the park!!! John asked me to add some striping to the effort, which I was honored to do!!!

Disclaimer: the blue numbers/GY diamond and yellow “GoodYear” are not mine....

Look for @john mullen @D-Russ @TomT and crew on the Salt next month!

  13. I'm not sure if this helps, or hurts my sketch ? I shined a light on the sunrise, for an artsy effect. But Im just playing. 20180713_042012.jpeg

  18. ( A STORY ) A vintage photo of my wife lighting the candles on my daughter's 5th birthday cake. She made the cake to look like a teddy bear. We went to the park for a little party. We all three fit in the coupe better back then. :rolleyes:Lol 20180713_103944.jpeg
