Tradition is primarily a method for imparting knowledge. It does not intrinsically preclude innovation but it does tend to discourage disruption for its own sake. Tradition is essentially the older guy telling the younger guy, "Do it this way and it will work." It doesn't mean you can't do it in a different way. Chances are that you'll be wasting your time if you do it in a different way, but if you do and it works better, your new way becomes part of the tradition. That is how tradition works.

Tradition is therefore not intrinsically hidebound and reactionary. It only gained that association fairly recently, when historical developments cast tradition as a method of imparting knowledge at odds with centralized industrial R&D.

So, if you want examples, try pretty much everything before c.1750.

 

Can't say I buy that theory. For years blueprints were traditionally drawn by draftsmen, now it's all computers. Maybe in 50-100 years computer will be traditional and drafting will be archaic?

There's more to the term "traditional" than just "the old way".

It's easy to read too much into etymology, but in this case it's quite a giveaway. "Tradition" comes almost directly from the Latin trans + dictus (dare), "(that which is) handed across". The essential characteristic is the handing-on. The time aspect is implicit but secondary.

Yes, a body of traditional knowledge did develop around drawing blueprints, and I have personally inherited a lot of it – and in a strange way it's influenced the way I use CAD. But production according to blueprint is in another way itself an intrinsically counter-traditional way of doing things. Blueprints aren't all that old in the scheme of things. From where we are now it's hard even to imagine making stuff without some kind of external design process, but for a long time design and production were as intimately integrated as they remain in clay sculpture, for instance. The Classical Orders of antiquity weren't built off drawings. The great cathedrals were set out and proportioned from ropes on the ground. They didn't even require a universal standard of measure.

And we're seeing new mechanisms of tradition emerge, and in some wise even supplant prior mechanisms of centralized command. You can see it in the first tentative attempts at stigmergic production. What do you think tech threads on the HAMB are? They are tradition happening – being created – before your eyes.

The problem with some of contemporary design is that it is based on the premise that form precedes function, being by this same reasoning that traditional forms, being old fashioned don't sell. Instead of having a look back at the premise of something that functions better, we only see products that look different from the past cycle. A good example of some of the traditional designs getting, a few of what was once British Leland Land Rovers still look the same, and theoretically are mechanically better; whereas Jeep has altered everything and been owned by a variety of investment schemes. Ditto for Land Rover. I followed closely the information flow of the B1 bomber, the first plane of any size to be designed fully in a computer. I have no info on the synergy of that to production, knowing that large airplanes are built on a one shot basis, generally all the work being done by hand. One thing is sure, it is miraculous thing in flight with so many stealth capabilities it seems more like something from an advanced alien civilization.
