Hot Rods Who's running a Caddy in their Hot Rod ??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DeLuxe 32, Jul 9, 2018.

  1. Looking for all things Cadillac... 331/365/390 powered Hot Rods. Post your pictures, and as much detail about your build, intakes, trans combo's etc.

  2. Swiss Mike WILL be running a 331 in his ‘39 Merc Coupe Project
Hopefully he will chime in and share all the details

20180214_122615.jpg no where to put it yet.

  6. I'd prefer to keep it just the 331/365 and the 390 ('62 and earlier) Cadillac engines.

I spend most of my free time working on this ‘60 390. I rebuilt it myself along with it’s Jetaway, and brought this ‘55 Eldo dual quad with original Rochesters back from a crusty , bug-filled, missing parts grave. Runs awesome but still working out the bugs. I need to drink more.

My '40 (in the avatar) has been Cad powered for a few years. Prior to the Cad it was flathead Mercury power with a '48 Lincoln trans & overdrive plus a 3:78 rear end. A really good highway friendly combo. But doing what I do, I had to change things. But in my OLD HOTROD spirit I could not use a small block Chevy. Looking at a SBC -'40 Ford is like looking at a row of '32 Fords at LARS--not much new or imaginative.
*** Owners of SBC powered cars, don't be offended, it's MY take on the hobby.***
First, I installed a '57 365 Cadillac with a later 3 speed Saginaw & overdrive. I tried utilizing the banjo with an open drive conversion. I was afraid of that combo so next was an 8" Granada & 3:40 gears with parallel leafs. Sometime later I exchanged the 365 for a 390, still with the Saginaw. This past winter I pulled it apart & using a Wilcap adapter installed a TH 200 4 R trans. I'm an old motorcycle rider with damaged parts, so the auto trans was self serving--I do miss the manual shift.

There's some really good looking engines in here. Sure makes me feel bad about mine all dirty sitting in the corner.

  24. The '55 331 that was in my roadster, it may go back in or perhaps the 390 I've got on a stand. Whatever happens, I'm going to end up with one of them in my '40.... DSC00020.JPG

    Started out installing a 331 in my 34 Chevy. However, I just found a good re-buildable 390.

  28. Hey Rex,

Did you have to move the front cross member forward to allow enough room for the 390? I'll most likely have to modify the firewall to fit mine in as my chassis is pinched and bobbed, so not many options.

IMG_0799.jpg My almost completed 33 five window with a 1953 Cadillac 331. Has old chrome valve covers. Will start with the stock manifold and 4 bbl, but have a 3-2 set up waiting in the wings.
