  7. That "362c.i." marking on the fender of this '61 Chevy looks strange to me. Not a common displacement in my mind from back then. A bored 348?

For years I have wanted to find the location of the First Drag Race, at the Goleta CA airport, 1949. I flew into the airport last week and looked for it, actually three parts to the old airport, and so was not sure I found it. So I went on Google Earth (with guidance from Lou Wells), and I think that this is the place. Notice the buildings behind the cars in the old photo from HRM, the windows seem to match. I think that the drag strip ran down the road to the right.

I drove down this road and found the small bridge that ran over a creek, that was the finish line (you could tell who won when the first car bounced over the bridge). For me, this is a sort of holy pilgrimage...in a drag racing sense.

Shuljack and Suba, saw it run at San Gabriel with Chuck Suba at the wheel...I think that Chuck later died in a rocket or jet car crash.

Kamboor, Ewell, and Stecker, closest, then Red Case, and Dallas Martinson at Bakersfield.. . Manuel Maldonado might have taken the photo. Red Case would later die in a conventional slingshot at Vacaville.

Fritz Voigt at Bakersfield, running "Open Gas," before they were called (top gas). Fritz beat many a fuel dragster with this gas car, before it went to Koper and Callahan...Joe Koper lost his life in it at Lions.
