pushed the car outside yesterday to look at the proportions, and take a couple pics. I think it'll look the part. Front should come down a little with more weight on it, and I'll probably play with the springs some.

I am impressed with the progress you are making. I wonder it they will allow you to do the old style rossin burnouts?;)

Have you decided on a paint scheme? The Sox and Martin red, white, and blue is pretty sweet!

no, I haven't decided on a paint scheme. I have some ideas, but mostly they involve painting the car white, then adding some color to it. I don't want to copy a specific old race car, but I do want to copy the flavor of the old race cars.

I like the hell out of that statement right there. Original paint scheme but fully reflective of the era it represents.

  12. It seems like almost all these cars at that time used the '66 style front end. They were obviously trying to keep the cars looking as new as possible. But I always thought the '65 nose looked better. The character line at the top of the fender was distinctive and kept it from looking to "slabby". And the fitment of the headlights into the front of the fender provided a bit of flow instead of just the blunt, angled, chopped-off shape of the '66.

Wow! Jim I can barely wipe the grin off my face and I am just looking at your photo! Can't imagine how amazing you must feel seeing it in person and knowing you are responsible for it! This is one killer looking machine already; can't wait to see it complete and blasting down the strip not to mention the highway!

If you close your eyes and squint a little, you'd think the top pic is the bottom car, found in some barn somewhere last week, waiting to be restored to it's former glory!
I'd say you nailed it Jim. You definitely have the vision down to the details.

BamaMav I could not have said it better, when I went on Hamb this morning and saw the two cars I was amazed. I forgot about Ronnie Sox's Barracuda and wow that's going to be some wild street car that is sure to make magazine pages.

Everything about that car looks right, you have definitely nailed the proportions. It looks like it's ready to stage at Lions or Irwindale back in the days of match racing.

1/16" thick 1/2" diameter mild steel round tubing.

I bend it to the correct curve using my new high tech mandrel bender :)

I seen that method in a how to in one of the magazines. May have been Popular Hot Rodding. May have been Project-X as well?

The neat thing is that the tubing spring back is about the clearance you want between the tire and the fender lip.

  25. Jim, it looks like you are planning on Hoosiers for your slicks. Have you given much thought about what tire you would run on the rear on the street? Type, size, etc.

see that tire that I bend the tubing around? That's the current plan, but subject to change. The Coker L78-15s off my Chevy II, but mounted on old Ford truck wheels. The tires tuck into the fender so I don't have to worry about them rubbing when I'm driving on the rough streets. I might decide to go with radials, we'll see how wimpy I get.

This is so true. I've seen of late with a die hard car and tradition person I'll not give a name to go soft. And as for me, well it's uncertain yet as to what my 56 will evolve into.

    thanks guys!

Playing with the headers....I want zoomies...sort of... The early AWB cars mostly had fenderwell headers, but a few guys had individual pipes, usually long ones, angled back. I think I'll update this idea a bit, to more modern style zoomies but with the tips angled back, and flat.

One interesting thing is that I need to be able to drive it on the street, and also go racing. In street mode, I want it to be quiet. I got a little taste of a blower motor with zoomies on the street last year, driving with Brian for a day. It's too much for me. So I plan to make a flange at the bottom, and be able to bolt on either the zoomie tips, or a collector. The collector probably won't be very efficient, but since it's just for street driving, it doesn't matter. Basically a log with a 2.5 or 3" pipe sticking straight out the back, connected to a muffler and tailpipe, that I will remove for racing.

These pics are the first look at what is happening here. The pipes laying on the engine, would be cut at the flange, so the end sticks straight out sideways. I just haven't trimmed them yet.
