Anyone else run into this? I picked up these model a bones and I had this axle I believe is a 37-41. Could I get away with grinding on the axle a bit or should this be done on a mill? Sent from my SM-T530NU using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Model A bones are weak and need to be modified to get a good caster angle.. In my opinion you would be better off getting later bones that have a little caster built into them and are a lot stronger...
Assuming your calipers are correct, your axle spring perch boss is too tall. Model A axle spring perches are 2.250" and 37-41 car axles are the same 2.250". I'm using a 37 axle with model A bones on my latest project and they fit perfect. (see picture). Be advised that if your going to use a traverse spring. the perches are 2" wider on the 37-41 axles and you will need a longer spring ( got mine from Posie). I sent my axle to Sid and he dropped and stretched it to maintain the 48 1/2" king pin to king pin center. set the camber, magna fluxed the axle and bent my spindle arms to match the drop. It even came back painted. I personal would not grind on the spring perch boss but let an expert do it.
Not sure why; but my experience with axles differ from those numbers. '28-'31 A axle perch bosses are 2-1/4", '32-'36 axles are 2", and '37 up axles are for the most part 2-1/4"; but it not unusual to find them a little thicker. Not a big deal to cut down. A disc grinder will make quick work of it; of course if feel it is necessary, a Bridgeport will do the job. Like scrap metal 48 says, A wishbones have their place; but depending on what you are to, later 'bones have a lot of advantages.
