I just got an old Mallory Double-Life Dual Point for my early SBC that I'm building. It is a YC-310-F. I know that the YC denotes a Dual Point with this specific body, and I know that the 310 denotes Chevrolet V8, but what about the F? I've read, mostly around these parts, that the suffix has to do with the mechanical advance curve but I haven't been able to find a reference for what those differences would be. The most common ones seem to be HP, F, and G but I'm sure that there are more out there. One blurb in an ad said that G was for corvette applications, but I feel that that is just seller's hype. I'm hoping a got a good one for a street application, but even if I didn't, the flat cap on this one should be worth more than what I paid for the whole thing... *** List of Mallory Distributor Applications to be added below *** Distributor Prefixes: Y - Centrifugal (mechanical) Advance Z - Centrifugal and Vacuum Advance C - Circuit Breaker (points) type distributors M - Magnetic Trigger type distributors G - Governor Attachment Number & Suffix - Year - Application - Make - Cylinders & Rotation 011 - 1928-32 - Model A and Model B - Ford - 4 LH 012 - 1928-32 - All - Packard & Graham-Paige - 6 RH 013BZ - 1940-48 - All - Cadillac - 8 RH 013CD - Unknown - Continental B-6427 - Continental - 6 LH 013CJ - Unknown - 377, 477, 501 - AutoCar - 6 RH 013CL - Unknown - B6, EN, 310, BQ, CE, CF, CT, BG, CU, EN415, 468, 425 - Mack - 6 RH 013CM - Unknown - EN354 - Mack - 6 RH 013CN - Unknown - BG, EN-310 - Mack - 6 RH 013CP - Unknown - B6, CO, EN310, EN354 - Mack - 6 LH 013CR - Unknown - Marine - Unknown - 6 LH 013CW - Unknown - Magnetti Marelli - Fiat - 4 RH 013W - Unknown - 11A, 13A, 16A, 20A, 21H - White - 6 RH 014 - Unknown - Truck - Mack - 4 RH 015 - 1928-on - Unknown - Dodge - 4 RH 016 - 1927-on - Model 31 - Chandler 6 RH 017 - 1926-on - T-6 - Red - 6 RH 018 - Unknown - Truck - International Harvester - 4 RH 019 - Unknown - Bus - Wills - 6 RH 020 - Unknown - Truck - Mack - 6 LH 021 - 1928-on - Model B - Divco - 4 RH 022 - Unknown 023 - 1928-32 - All - Oldsmobile - 6 RH 024 - 1927-30 - Senior - Dodge - 6 RH 025 - 1929-36 - Unknown - Studebaker/Jordan/Pierce-Arrow - 8 RH 026 - 1929-33 - Model K - Desoto/Chrysler - 6 RH 027 - 1928-29 - Unknown - Hudson - 6 RH 028 - 1926-on - Model A - Jordan - 8 RH 029 - 1928-30 - Model 70 - Durant - 6 RH 030 - 1928-29 - Unknown - Wolverine - 6 LH 031 - 1929-30 - Unknown - Desoto/Chrysler - 6 RH 032 - 1930-on - 353 - Cadillac - 8 RH ***skipping ahead*** 292A - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 292B - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 292C - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 292D - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 292E - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 292F - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 292G - 1953-64 - 322ci, 361-425ci - Buick - 8 RH 293A - 1952-74 - Type 1, 356B, 356C, 912, 1600S (all Air-Cooled) - VW/Porsche - 4 RH 293B - 1952-74 - Type 1, 356B, 356C, 912, 1600S (all Air-Cooled) - VW/Porsche - 4 RH 293C - 1952-74 - Type 1, 356B, 356C, 912, 1600S (all Air-Cooled) - VW/Porsche - 4 RH 293D - 1952-74 - Type 1, 356B, 356C, 912, 1600S (all Air-Cooled) - VW/Porsche - 4 RH 294A - 1953-60 - V8 - Studebaker/Packard - 8 LH 294B - 1953-60 - V8 - Studebaker/Packard - 8 LH 295A - 1953-56 - Jet, Super Jet, Jet Liner, Wasp - Hudson - 6 RH 295B - 1953-56 - Jet, Super Jet, Jet Liner, Wasp - Hudson - 6 RH 296A - Unknown - 100 - Austin-Healey - 4 LH 296B - Unknown - 100 - Austin-Healey - 4 LH 297 - 1954-58 - 360ci, 370ci, 426ci, 503ci - GMC - 6 RH 298 - Unknown - Marine - Gray - 4 RH 299 - Unknown - Marine - Gray - 4 RH 300A - 1954 - 239ci with hex-drive - Ford - 8 LH 300B - 1954 - 239ci with hex-drive - Ford - 8 LH 301 - 1954 - 250ci, 256ci - Mercury/Ford - 8 LH 302 - 1954 - All - Lincoln - 8 LH 303A - 1954-60 - All - Cadillac - 8 LH 303B - 1954-60 - All - Cadillac - 8 LH 303C - 1954-60 - All - Cadillac - 8 LH 303D - 1954-60 - All - Cadillac - 8 LH 303E - 1954-60 - All - Cadillac - 8 LH 304 - Unknown - Unknown - Unknown - 1 LH 305 - Unknown - Unknown - Waukesha - 4 LH 306 - Unknown - English Zephyr - Ford - 6 LH 307 - Unknown - Unknown - Waukesha - 4 LH 308 - Unknown - Marine - Scripps - 6 RH 309 - 1954 - Marine - Gray - 6 RH 310A - 1955-96 - Std Chev. this guy probably knows everything you ever wanted to learn about a Mallory... http://www.bubbasignition.com/mallory.html
I figure this might be as good a place as any to make a "master" list of Mallory numbers and prefixes. I've updated the thread title and as we dig up numbers and codes I'll update the original post so guys can figure out what Mallory they just bought at the local swap...
Seems like there is a list floating around on here somewhere. Might be a link to a list, but I'm pretty sure I've seen one.
I found that list from a previous thread. It shows the cross reference for the old numbers to their new numbers. It shows that the suffix denotes advance curves, but isn't specific as to what those different curves are...
I found a big list on this thread: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-mallory-numbers.979559/ ...but it is a photocopied list and a few of the pages seem to have disappeared into the interwebs. I'll work on transcribing the list to my original post.
Yes, as you said YC denotes a Mallory being dual point but so does ZC. The YC Mallory’s are centrifugal advance only, while a ZC has both centrifugal and vacuum advance. I have never found any info that explains the suffix letters.
this may be the same list as already posted.... https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/mallory-distributor-part-number-list.1088268/
It does, and thats where I'm pulling this info from. However, that list has many holes in it, it doesn't even show the 310F that I have, and is not searchable in the way that a typed-in post would be. While I'm being selfish asking for information, I may as well do something for the good of the HAMB and the web while I'm at it...
Hmmm @Moriarity . This chart only shows the 310 with the A-E suffixes: ...thats where my question stemmed from. The 310F isn't reflected there. In the chart you showed (presumably from 1959?), it only shows the 310F and none of the other ones. In other types the suffixes appear to change with different years, ie the 1952 Caddy is a ZC 283A while the '53 is a ZC 283B. I'll buy that they are a different curve, but there seems no rhyme or reason to the curves being different on the same car of a different year. If anything though, your chart lays to rest my original concern, of whether a YC-310F would work in a mostly stock 1958 283 with a 097 cam. Its right there on your chart as the only option.
kadillackid posted a page from Mallory Form 347 and it mentions distributors stamped with an M, if you run across one of those check to see if there is a jumper connecting the two sets of points. A virgin "M" dist. will not have a jumper, those points are wired separately to a Magspark Transformer. The side of the Magspark with a tag stamped with a P connects to the condenser on the distributor and that condenser should already be connected to the P terminal. The other side of the Magspark will have an R terminal and that obviously goes to the other set of points connected to the R terminal of the distributor body. If an M stamped distributor has been changed by someone and does have a jumper wire connecting the two sets of points then it can be used and wired as with a conventional coil.
I’m bringing this old thread back up to see if there is any new info. I picked up a Mallory flat cap distributor for my 283. At least I hope I can run it. Its a ZC 310-HP G. Everything seems good, except I’m trying to find out what the “G” suffix means. Supposedly it has to do with advance curve. Is there any new info that has come to light on this. I don’t see the G suffix listed in any of the Mallory documents attached to this thread. Just trying to figure out what I have and whether I can use it.
Picked this SBC one up at a garage sale last week for $10 which included new points in their boxes. I only see number 101 on the shaft. The logo has deteriorated, although up close you can tell it said Mallory.
Okay, Just FYI. I found an old 1966 catalog that lists both the "F" and the "G" suffixes. Applications listed as follows: Chevy 283: ZC 310-HP F Chevy 327: ZC 310-HP G So, as mentioned, I'm guessing it truly is just a different advance curve and not some other weird-assed thing.
I'm wondering if someone could help me understand my Mallory Distributor. Its labeled Model ZA, Type 20A. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
