Here are a few of the Sawtell family's rods from Plympton in South Australia.

Pete's bucket used a 30 Chevy tub front half on a Whippet frame with early Ford running gear.

Pete's older brother John was building a T tub and Pete started on a 23 T roadster but then got married and John took over the roadster project.

Although not strictly a rod or custom per the thread theme their dad Don built this 4 cylinder Hillman powered X/Dragster that John drove early in its life. All of these cars were built in the back yard shown in the first photos although I did paint the 23 in my parents' garage. The candy orange on Pete's bucket was done in the open fronted shed in the background of the second photo.

Don also built a matching mini bike from a BSA Bantam to use to get around the pits and this shot shows Pete riding it at Castlereagh

  8. Great thread! I wish someone would start a separate thread for Australian hot rods of the 50's and 60's.

  9. Thanks for those pics Rooman, lots of local cars (where are they now?) in that lot. The AP5? tailights on the FC are nifty.

AP5 or AP6 wagon? I'll have to have a look at the AP5 wagon in the paddock as I can't remember as some had a round tail-light section and some were straight like in the pic.

  13. You guys know how to build traditional Hot Rods for sure! Good to see Swifty's T in a couple of photos.;) It would be nice to spend your Summers there. Since it is Winter now in Australia. Looks like a great place to be if you are a Hot Rod nut. Except for the Snakes!

Thanks mate! Waaay back in time I actually had one of my photos used as the cover shot on Hot Rod. I will try to find and scan/post it as it is relevant to this thread.

    Charlie,
the only problem with using 13" rims on wide five centers was tightening up the lug nuts as they end up very close to the well section of the rim.

Nice stuff, Rooman. The early Holden customs are cool. But that FB/EK is not really pretty, but a lot of work gone into it.
I can see some covers featuring some of those customs.
