You're quite welcome. Glad I could help. It's great having a moderate size lathe on hand for whenever you might need it. I have a late 60's-early 70's Craftsman 12"x24" that I picked up cheap, but did have to round up a few of the covers/guards, and the rear vertical drive for it. Still whipping it into shape, but it is usable.
Nothing like a good, old quality cast iron piece of equipment.

:D Not car parts, but.A friend used to work for the city trash collection dept. His best find was an 1873 Winchester in 44-40 caliber that had been turned into an end lamp. His son still hunts with it to this day.And about two weeks later I found a beautiful pair of mod 97 Winchester 12 ga shotguns in hard cases.
    Good luck.have fun.Be safe.

DAMN, Woodbutcher! And I thought LMI4 made a score with all those parts in the ditch.
(Care to double your money on one of the shotguns? :D)

  5. Sounds like county road/trash employees can really latch onto some great finds.

  7. There is something about using stuff that once belonged to people who died a long time ago. I have a bench vise, files, and big C clamps that belonged to my wife's grandfather that are at least 100 years old, still use them. There is an iron skillet in our family that belonged to my 3x-great grandmother who was born about 1810 and died in 1903. That thing was frying bacon and baking cornbread before the Civil War, and the cousin who has it now uses it every time she makes cornbread.

Cast iron is definitely traditional, funny you mentioned that just made up a batch of scratch bisquits and sausage gravy in a Griswold from the 50s and a Favorite Piqua from the 20s or thereabouts.

Does a foot long Subway tuna sandwich with only one bite out of it count?

Next time you visit your cousin, when she isn't looking grab a steel chore-boy and some detergent and scrub that pan down to bare, clean metal. She'll really appreciate it. Thank me later.

  16. Well being I was a trash man for 7 years I could write a book on this but the one thing that comes to mind right away is a record book that was kept by the mother of a WWII marine. It contained letters and postcards he sent home, empty shells of the gun he qualified with on the shooting range, pictures of his basic training, etc... It was so cool and I can't not imagine why they would throw it away. It contains some great nostalgia and history.

I wondered the exact same thing after Dad passed away, Mom tossed a case of letters that they had sent to each other during WWII. Treasured heirloom to me, I can track every place he was, but there was little detail allowed. He sent a letter on D-Day, said it was a major deal and would be in the newspapers. Miss them both every day. Bob

  19. Not sure, I sold them last night. The guys who bought them are putting a Model B in one. The second may get a V8-60 or a 59-AB.

  20. Changed it, Why go forward in time all the good/cool stuff happened at least 45 years ago!

Spotted one wheel sticking outta a dumpster. I almost fell in trying to get it out. Then destroyed my already messed up back lifting it...but was worth it. 1892.jpeg

When I worked at a landfill I found a Huskvarna ? chain saw with a 24 inch bar $100 ing. box fixed it right up.My neighbor had to have it $250 ,just to shut him up ok he bit. I think fixed some thing for half of the people who worked there. O ya a lady pulled up with a truck with a camper shell it was packed with tools and boxes and starts tossing them out, hubby was two timing her.

  29. My wife found approximately 15 years of Circle Track and other popular stock car racing magazines, dating from the late 60s to the early 80s. All in excellent condition.
