    Hey SD,

The fastest way was to use that hydraulic floor jack. That was the hardest thing to do in this exchange process. Doug Cook's set up is much higher than our normal steel jack stands for safety. So, that hydraulic jack was more important to get the 3rd member gear housing up there to just slide it into the big opening. His idea of just moving the axles outward just enough (and leaving them in the housing) also saved a lot of time and energy in this exchange.

It has been asked as to why rear gear changes were necessary. The factory stock Chevy cars usually came with 3:55s and some 3:78s. When Chevrolet invented the Positraction differential in 1958, that made a big difference. It was sold as an option, which meant not all cars from the factory had it. That meant it could be replacing the standard non-Positraction differential gear unit. Positraction just worked better for both wheels to drive the car at the dragstrip or even on the normal highways.

Now, both wheels and tires were getting the power to roll and drive forward together. The days of one wheel spinning on the street is no longer a factor. Limited-slip differentials overcome traction loss by sending power to both driven wheels while still allowing each to rotate independently when necessary. This can help on slick roads, and also during a launch off the line at a drag strip.

The Positraction gear unit from the 58 Chevys could be put into the earlier Chevy rear axle housings. The 3:55/3:78s were good for smooth running street driving and go from the stop lights, but the 4:11 and 4:56 gears were much better at the drag strips. Of course, there is always a drawback to running those 4:11-4:56 gears.

Those factors aside, the improvement in E.T. times were much better with the 4:56 gears. So, for daily street driven cars like our 58 Impala, the 3:78s were best for driving to the beach, mountains, Colorado River, and general cruising. But, if high speed action was necessary, there was no error using the 4:56 gears for the ultimate traction and power.

Gear changes and experimentation was mandatory for different conditions, so weekly changes and information was necessary. I was responsible for changing those 3rd member units with the different gear combos.

Once, we went to the beach with 4:56 gears in place. It was only 10 miles away, but those long stretches of highway made the motor rev up quite high. But, the advantage was that the full power of the motor was available with plenty of traction to back it up.

On another weekend, we went to one of the early Winternationals in Pomona. The long freeway drive played havoc with the noise, sound of the motor and being laughed at by passing hot rodders, asking if we shouldn’t shift to 3rd? Our 58 Impala had the white round ball on the column shift lever. The C&O Stick Hydro shift pattern was such that the Drive selector was in the normal 2nd gear position.

So, we were cruising back 45 miles to Long Beach via the freeways and it seemed like we were in 2nd gear. They hot rodders coming up along side of us used the motion of shifting down to 3rd with a quizzical look on their faces. We just looked, laughed and powered away from them with ease. I should have changed out the 4:56 with the 3:55 or 3:78 unit for this long drive.

The gear changes in our 671 SBC 40 Willys with the 56 Chevy axle set up, were easier, much like Doug Cook's. Since it was not going to be a daily street driver, once we figured out the best motor set up, E.T. times, and speed, the exchanges dropped down to almost zero.

There sure is a difference between the Bugatti line and the Plymouth line. Progress I guess.

Perhaps because Bugattis were not mass produced on purpose.

We drove the '62 409 from Glendale to Pomona with the 4.56's installed and it was a little high in RPM's but it really jumped. We had the dealer do the switches from drag gears to street gears. In those days, it didn't cost much to do that.

Yeah I'm glad I have a cell phone. It was awful hard trying to fit a CB in my pocket.

You know what kills me? The basic Cobra (and probably Midland) CB radios cost almost EXACTLY the same today as they did when I sold them at Olsen's Electronics or Radio Shack back in 1975!
