Technical Banjo or 9” rearend

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Alexanderkustoms55, Jun 18, 2018.

  1. Kinda stuck on this dilemma.. I have a banjo with 3.78 gears but kinda want to go 9” with 3.54 gears for highway driving.. I’m running a 1955 270 hemi with th350 trans.. what do you guys think?

Hooking a 350 Turbo to an old banjo rearend is kinda silly. You aren't staying traditional, why bother with all the extra expense of the open drive on the old rear? The ONLY reason might be if you have everything else on the car that shows built with 100% old parts. If you can kneel down and see anything like a new hairpin, Vega steering, tube shocks, etc., then why bother?

Or an 8". Plenty strong for that engine, and saves a fair bit of weight.
If you like the look of a 9", it looks the same only a smidge smaller.

8 inch might be easier to find in the right width though. They were under a lot of Grenadas and Monarchs from the late 70's. Gear ratio might be the issue though. It is reasonably easy to find a 9 inch truck rear with 3.5 gears but they are wide unless you get an early one.

Also Fairlanes, Falcons, Mavericks and even Mustang II, but the last is four bolt.

What car is it going into? 9 inch rears are heavy and can be too wide.
Will you have to narrow it?

  10. What kind of car? Weight? 3.00 : 1 would be ok in a T bucket, sluggish in a '54 Chevy wagon for example.

Depends on tire diameter and desired cruising speed/rpm.

They made a couple bazillion 9" Ford rears. Don't let the ratio be the deciding factor. Find a housing that fits your needs first, then you can search for a chunk with the proper ratio. Or you can buy new R&P reasonably and swap to the exact ratio you wish.

60 inches? Aren't the wheels going to be sticking out a bit?

No worries, I had a 60" on my RPU and it looked great, all about the back spacing though. I used chrome reverse but don't remember the back space. looked killer.

  23. The banjo is about 60 inches is about the with of a banjo rear end and that’s what’s in the above picture and it looks perfect

Pinto and Bobcat V6, 4spd wagons had 3.50 or 3.55 8in. rears (can't remember which). Pumpkin fits the other housings.

Those Pinto and Bobcat 8" rear ends sometimes had limited slip. The axles are four bolt.

I don't think it's only the wagons, the coupes I looked at in the junkyard years ago always had an 8" with a V6.
