Well, back in the days of dirt track cars that were built from 30s&40s cars and those in the "Sportsman" class had to have a body that matched the engine, nothing was said about the front axle, and most of the cars running an SBC and an early to mid 30s Chevy body used a Ford front axle assembly with transverse spring for better handing.

Agreed, but still wonder if it wouldn't be a more positive location of the axleo_O:rolleyes:

I don't need it to be more positive than leaf springs give me...so I'm not worried about it.

  8. You guys are providing good feedback, but honestly Jim knows what he is doing and will ask for opinions if he needs help.
Let's try to stick with following the build. Time is ticking away.

  9. Remember this is a light weight race car with above average weight on the rear of the car. Truck springs are way to much spring. It needs enough spring to keep the pan from getting smashed after a wheelie and soft enough to keep the wheels on the ground going down the road. Shocks will be key items. Before I got mine right I could bounce the front wheels off the ground towing through the pits.

So what do you suppose the Barracuda will change into just before hitting the dozers? Fast back mustang maybe...lol!

Jim this thing is looking awesome!

    thanks!

We got back from our Airstream trip to Yellowstone, and I've mostly recovered. And getting back into working on the car. I've been getting some parts for the engine, and started on the quarter panels. Still waiting for some engine parts I ordered, and need to order a bunch more, too. It's going to be iffy whether it gets done by September, but I'll keep after it.

Been slowly tinkering away. I have mostly finished putting on mounting tabs for the seats, harness, motor plates and limiter, and the parking brake stuff. And the rear end is put together. Still behind the 8 ball on the engine parts....one of these days, I might get a crank, rods, and pistons. And a blower. Need to get all the valvetrain stuff, and get some work done on the heads so the valves will fit them, etc. then there's the transmission, and all that bodywork, fenders, doors, on and on.

But I did get my driver license, so that's a start.

  20. Coingrats on the Comp License. The chassis work looks great. But for a man who still needs a crank, rods and pistons I'm still impressed that you've got the parking brakes sorted out already. A man's got to have his priorities straight. :p I'll admit I felt a little twinge when you started cutting up that incredibly solid, original early Barracuda. But I'm all better with it now. :D

Wow, you made some great progress ,my congratulations to your license too! You are doing excellent work as always. The tabs on top of the round tubing you clamped your ground to, are the seat mounts for driver´s and pass´s seats , ain´t they? Jim, are you going to do a bolt -in floor or weld it in? And are you going to bolt the body to the chassis or weld it solid? Sorry for asking so many questions, I have never built a racecar and try to gather ideas for my 53 Chevy Gasser project.

I'm planning to make an aluminum floor, and rivet it in. The body will bolt on to the frame. There are brackets to support the rockers, and I will make steel pieces inside the body to meet up with the aluminum pieces of the floor and firewall. Probably a strange way to do it, but there are some advantages to being able to remove the body.

I put it together on a "sort of" frame table. So it's mostly square.
