    Hello,

Don Hampton is very well known in the drag racing circles. He teamed up with Kenny Lindley in the white full body FED in 59-60 and that became a great competitor everywhere. As stated before, we saw this FED almost every week at Lions Dragstrip. It was a hard charging race car with a very skillful race car driver.
    Here’s coming at you…

Don Hampton has gone on to being one of the top custom blower drive kit producers in the industry. There is plenty of background in drag racing and in all applications of his shop’s supplies, staff and crew.

The above Clay Smith Engineering ad was in 1959 during the cam builders' “ad war” in the Drag News paper every week. The Clay Smith Speed Shop was just down the street from our house in the Westside of Long Beach. In this ad, they had moved near the 405 Freeway, LB Airport, Signal Hill, and were close to Reath Automotive's newer corner building, just up the street, on Cherry Ave and 33rd.

This old photo is/was a copy of drag racing action that we saw at Lions Dragstrip, almost weekly. Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton vs the Jack Chrisman in the Sidewinder. (at 0:30)

    HERBERT CAMS SPECIAL in 1960

    Hello,

58 years ago, in 1960 at Lions Dragstrip, there was this yellow FED sponsored by Chet Herbert Cams. The driver was Gary Cagle. It was a very fast FED that won a lot of trophies and later on in June, 1960 at Pomona, he set the world record for the class.
upload_2018-6-30_4-35-43.png upload_2018-6-30_4-36-0.png We would see this yellow FED at Lions almost every week. It was very competitive all over the So Cal dragstrips. But at Lions, it stood out not only for its yellow paint, but the top quality build and tremendous power

In the movie, the first race had the yellow Herbert Cams FED slightly behind at the tower vs. the Kenny Lindley/Don Hampton white FED. In a rematch, it is a little different.

What we did miss, was the top speed record in 1959. Gary Cagle drove the Herbert Cams/Torco Oil fueler to top speed of the big drag race event at 180.36 mph. The record was set at the Bakersfield's Smokers' first U.S. Fuel and Gas Championships in March of 1959.

The fabulous yellow, Herbert Cams Special got its final salute. It was put up for sale.

Nice post a few pages back on Dyno Don. The man is a legend and his career highlights have been captured in a new book. Written with a countless number of contributors, including family members, the book is chalk full of great information and new photos. Available July 15 through your local bookstore or any online store. A Cartech Books release.

Two roadsters at Saugus...the watermark has been removed, but I am sure that these are from the Jamie Barter collection...lots of great Saugus pictures there. Saugus ran from the early '50s until it closed, in the early '60s, I think, after San Fernando opened. It is all under houses today, no trace of it.

Norton Brothers fueler from the Northwest, not sure what track this is. (Correction from Marty Strode: Dave, That last shot is Earl Floyd, driving the first "Northwind". He was partnered with Jim Albrich and Jack Coonrod. The track was Kent, Wa.) Thanks, Marty, the photo was mis-captioned, and I could not see enough of the car to validate it...

Dave, That last shot is Earl Floyd, driving the first "Northwind". He was partnered with Jim Albrich and Jack Coonrod. The track was Kent, Wa. Here is one taken at McMinnville,Or in 1962. Earl told me, "we ran a big load of nitro, and had a 4200 lb clutch, it would either smoke the tires, wheelstand, or both" ! It was my first time hearing a blown, fuel Chrysler, TE 440, Enderle "Barndoor" and a chain drive blower. Earl also noted, when this picture was taken, he was racing against the Dragmaster Dart, and Jim Nelson was far enough ahead, he wasn't even in the picture. 2012-07-28 111101.jpg
