The front was lowered by moving the spring perch on the A arms down 1" when built. I would like to lower the rear to match the front ride height closely to regain what little caster this front suspension allows, this may help the steering wandering feeling, maybe due to loss of caster. The caster adjustment is maxed out right now. Lowering the spring perch on the A arms down 1" effectively lowers the front almost 2 ". Has anyone ever found a rear coil spring that will lower it about 2" or had custom coil springs made ?
On my'40, I made mounts to locate the rear axle about 4" above the rear axle mounting arms..( Think "Truck Arm" suspension )...Working great with stock springs ....
I did some studying with Moog and ESPO and Rockauto and came up with 1982 Olds Custom Cruiser on rear, had same pigtail ends, less coils, shorter free length, slightly larger wire diameter.. Ended up buying from local Oreilly Auto Parts store in case I guessed wrong. They Precision Coil Spring SP08255 (GCS5417 same as Moog #), for 1982 Olds Custom Cruiser on rear. It now sits 1" lower in rear and I think it may settle another 1/2" after a few hundred miles. Seems to help wandering since I gained a little front caster.
Did you change to tube shocks ? If so how/ where did you mount. My lever action shocks all leak. I also have a 42 Olds that I added outboard to the rear for front tube shocks from a 64 Rambler American. It drives and handles great, not too stiff, not too soft, just right
The shock brackets upper and lower are all bolt on if I ever want to go back original. In full right hand lock the tires barely touch the shock (see the torn decal)
This will give you some idea on the rear axle & shock mounting ....It has worked well for 40K +++ miles ...
Gonna try 74 Chevelle rear springs which according to my calculations should lower it another 1" in rear to get it level.
this worked as planned. I picked up ~1 deg of caster, less wandering in steering. Lowered 2" in rear/125" wheelbase = .16, arctangent is ~ 1 deg , now sits about 1/2" higher in rear instead of 2 1/2".
