    Hey FA,

That winding road (178) from Highway 99 through Bakersfield to Bodfish was a nice drive. We traveled that road back to Bakersfield many times on the return route to coastal So Cal. (once in the winter and once during the summer for 5 years) It was the fastest way back out of the Lake Isabella area to the freeway.

Two other times, we went East towards Ridgecrest and the desert areas, giving us a different prospective of driving back to coastal So Cal.

But, our favorite drive coming from the South was taking 223 through Arvin and the ice cream stop. It was the last, known to us, stopping place to stock up before driving on that long and winding road to Lake Isabella.

If we timed it wrong, we had to stop in that tiny Bodfish place for more supplies and gas to finish the trip to the lake. My wife’s family had a 20 acre property just a few miles outside of the actual lake. (a few minutes down the road from Bodfish) The drive on that “long and ending road” was good and bad.

In the summer, it was easy driving in the daytime. But, in the winter, there were some blind spots around some corners that still had ice patches, even though it was 70 degrees and sunny. The shade and low temps at night kept the ice around until the sun shifted later on in the weeks.

The ice patches certainly surprise the unwary driver rounding those blind corners. This road has been used in many car scenes in TV and movies. It is very distinct with the big, Manzanita bushes, tall Oak trees, the big batches of mistletoe hanging from those old trees.

My little son thought the name BODFISH was the funniest name for a little town that whooshed by if you blinked. “Here is comes, there it goes…” This road from Bodfish to Arvin is a DRIVING ROAD.

When the Hot Rod Shows are in nearby Bakersfield, it is a fun drive to the lake and desert beyond. But, the winding road south, has many 2nd gear turns and downhill blind spots. This is not the place for distracted driving as there are no rails on this winding road.

^^ No, but when you open the hood you can see the road past the engine.

    (Can't do that these days)

Since that is a '30 or '31 Model A body, probably not 1919

Looks like Mount Panorama, Bathurst, NSW, Australia. ( google bathurst 500 )

  20. Imagine time jumping and buying it out from under Mr. Skeptic.
I'd have no problem paying sticker for a fresh '63 stepside! Shortbed if possible, 283 with the non synchro 3 speed.

Definitely RHD , but I find it weird that Aussie Cops would use 2 door cars

Especially since two door cars are somewhat a rarity in Australia. Great picture.

Any idea of the wheels? They look like knock off wheels.

I did a search, the car was raced by the late Bert Needham in 1964
The car still survives today.[bottom photo]

I don't remember ever having seen or heard that that Studebaker was a former "cop car." I do remember that most Studebakers that raced in Australia were four door models. I believe the car in the picture is a '64. The wheels on the car are a factory option. There are exact aluminum copies for sale now. They do look exactly like the original mag wheels.
