I had a rental car in England a few years ago which did that - the jokesters at Hertz didn't warn me. For about the first five minutes I thought the car was stalling whenever I stopped until I accidentally discovered what was going on.

My reds header and ansen intake showed up yesterday. Still need to build the linkage and adjust the carb.

 

My current project is a 32 5W. Motor break in complete and leaking fuel pump needs to come out for the 3rd time. Is this the reason most guys don't run B fuel pumps?

Great job Dannerr, I've been wanting to do the same thing. What is the dimension between the back of the housing to the center of the ball? There are posts on the Barn about Ansen hydraulic brake conversion that uses Model A backing plates and drums. Thanks Brian

 

I wouldn't use stock model A drums for anything other then stock brakes. Even at that they are horrible. The stock drums are stamped steel and do not dissipate heat well. They fade fast and become useless when used hard.

Hey fourd,
Leaks can be fixed with top notch rebuild ! There is one place that rebuilds the '32 pumps, but the name escapes my old gray matter at this time. Leaks are annoying and can be dangerous/costly, however IMV, most do not use the original pump....due to COST first, then buying a 'rebuilt' with bad casting flaws or just worn out. Some like me, do not use the original due to using headers that interfere with the pump mount area. I do like the original pump, and thank Ford for putting it on the B. Someday, I'll install my 'rebuilt' (by an expert..ha !) '32 pump on a project.

Thanks for the reply. Renners Corner is who I found that makes the rebuild kits. Dave was very helpful with the kit, instructions and offers excellent parts. I must have missed a casting flaw, crack or a something that used to be flat and now has a dent.
How about I post some banger pictures next week from Dirt Drags? There might be a reverse cam miller running again.

Starting to get excited! I'll be there on the 31st. I'm just bummed that I have to drive the motor home not the banger.

 

So, I posted a photo of a light flywheel earlier.
It is a Sterling Rattler, a dynamic absorber. I just took it for a maiden run.
My A engine in the Cabriolet had some issues....lack of oil due to an oil pump screen getting plugged from the front seal material. The material had been scooped out when the front pulley cracked at the key way. The oil that is supposed to make it to the dipper tray, didn't, as a result. I caught it just in time and the engine was inserted so it got gone thru and put back in the car with the new flywheel.
I just did a butt dyno comparison as it is basically the same engine in the same car. It smoothed out the engine vibrations remarkably according to my butt and all other senses. I'm going to run it some more as I only have less than 20 miles on it. I am really encouraged that this is an other item in the tool box to help with engine longevity and performance. I was probably running the engine up to 3500 RPM no problem. I'm so encouraged, I'm likely to drop the hammer and put another one on a pressurized engine and see what it does.
I'm looking to become the US distributor for this and it would be an awesome item to have on hand for sale with no freight, at say something like.....the Dirt Drags.

Finished the interior in my coupe this evening. I am very excited to have another step finished on this car. Dirt drags next weekend and another two weeks or so I will have my inserted balanced motor from Burt’s. Stipe cam and a super Winfield head should make it scoot right along.

Is that Sedan with what appears to be a Riley 4-port yours ? I ask for a reason. Soon, I hope, to be installing Riley 4-port on my B engine. I was wondering how you did it, and if you ran into any problems with installation ? I've been told that this head MAY hit firewall ?? Thanks for any pictures you can do. We all like to oogle over banger porn, eh !

I never measured- first one was too short, second one was made longer and drilled, expecting to be too long, but fit just right. So I welded it up, and mounted it, never looking back...

 

This was posted on Facebook by Church of Speed and then the picture got shared to the Inliners International group - I can't find any details but this is a cool looking little banger.

 

I know every way to install a Riley Head the wrong way. PM me for free bad advice.
It will fit a 30-31 firewall if you remove the wiring box. I put my box on the inside of the firewall.

Any thoughts or experience with the brake drum reinforcement rings that are available for the stamped steel brake drums? I think it's Snyder's who offers them. By appearance and what I'd guess might have been the reasoning behind them is that they'd not only reinforce the steel drums, but also add some mass to help absorb and dissipate heat to reduce fading.

I intend to try to duplicate the Ansen hydraulic brake conversion on my '31 Coupe. I'll be starting on it soon. Many say just do later hydraulic brakes, and I understand that, but I'm considering working toward the Ansen approach as a challenge and throw back to what might have been done years ago. I understand Ansen offered the conversion kit for many years, so that suggests it offered some improvement to the mechanical A brakes.

The rings offer a slight improvement over no rings, but ultimately it is the base material that the drum is made of that is the problem. Mel Gross's cast iron drums are a direct replacement for stock, are made of the right material, and when painted look like stock. If you are adding hop up parts to make the engine more powerful, and you are going to hydraulic brakes to help improve the braking ability of your Model A, trust my, do not over look this upgrade!!!!!!!!

 

Ha, ha...will removing the wire box (great tip !) mean that it is no longer seen as stock , never mind the Riley 4-port.

At the very least if a guy wants to avoid (costly) mistakes that others have made and corrected, read a lot and ask questions, eh ! IMV, that's why this forum exists, as might get run out of town elsewhere , for such inquiry.

This is the 'cleanest' install/setup that I've seen. I'm aware of a guy who , for kicks, has made some A block setups that ran like stink, at least for a short while ! His work was beautiful and more complicated with 'waste gate', ect. He said that you'd better have a mighty strong built A block to expect it to last. Reportedly....it was fast engine, while it lasted !

 

I decided to use the long weekend to work on the stocker.

 

Besides BBQ this weekend I need to work on finishing the install of rear-end after the Antique Nationals.
Don't try this at home Boys and Girls, that radius rod was straight before driver had illusions of grander.....
