I was always impressed with the concept of the GM Quadrajet. You get very small primaries for low RPM throttle response, with a big pair of secondaries for upper RPM power. They have a couple of problems. No one knows how to set them up, and they are ugly bastards.

    Who's Stroker McGurt?

Sometimes the doofus (Coke and Smoke) who does a drunk post gets the most responses.

Looks like that would be just about right, if it would fit a SBC

  11. The basic format.[IMG]
This is the underside of a 4 barrel carb. Under normal driving conditions, the engine runs on the primary venturis, the front 2 ''barrels''. Like a 2 barrel carb. Under hard acceleration, the other 2 venturis come into play, adding air and fuel. This makes more power and speed. If your uncle doesn't see the value here, he's a total goober and you should hang out with cooler people.

  16. 1952 Stromberg 4A used on the Buick straight eight (only year)
Pontiac experimented with two four barrel carbs with a single barrel carb in the center to be used for idling. "5 barrel"
2 and 4 barrel carbs are rated differently due to the vacuum loss in the 4 barrel that cannot achieve the same amount as a 2 barrel and thus they had to be flowed differently.
Pontiac contacted Smokey Yunick to help with their big engine power for Bonneville. Smokey took a couple of carburetors and cut them in half and used the larger secondary sides for one larger carb, plus he added two accelerator pumps.
A four barrel carburetor is basically two, two barrel carburetors back to back sharing a fuel inlet. depending on the type of linkage between the halves, the back two barrels open by mechanical means, air flow or by a vacuum actuator. All are adjustable to the demands of the engine or conditions.

I would like to nominate this for silliest thread of the year, but then we do still have 7 more months to go.

Well old fart that I am I can understand where the OP is coming from and understand that uncle's line of thinking. WE all have that one relative, neighbor, friend or coworker who absolutely cannot grasp the concept of why we want to change anything on a car except the oil and the tires when they wear out and most o those kind aren't too good at keeping up with oil changes.
Why a 4 barrel as apposed to a 2 barrel. Generally better performance. Add to that in some cases better gas mileage as long as you don't have a lot of lead in your right foot. Back in 1969 I drove from Ft Hood Tx to Los Angeles with my army buddy Danny Gonzales and I drove one tank and he drove one tank and he got 2mpg better on his tanks than I did on mine in my car. Less lead in his foot.
Still it isn't worth arguing with relatives like that that only see things one way. If it's his car so be it, that is the way he likes it. If it is your car why would you need his permission to make changes?
Now that troll thing has me going, This one of those rat rod board things where you get your creds for going over on the Hamb and stirring up the pot?

A 2bbl carb is a small calibrated fuel leak.....a 4bbl is a larger calibrated fuel leak

2 hookers standing on the corner.
    1 is a 2 barrel- 2 holes
the other is a 2 barrel also- 2 holes
    together they make a 4 barrel - 4 holes
    simple
a little more money, but twice the fun.
