I have 3 - 9” 3rd members and I am looking for the best way to store them that they don’t take so much space in my small garage. Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully
Wish you were closer, I must have 25 or 30 of the 9 inch poly storage containers in my shed left from the 3rd members I sold my chassis customers. They'll probably still be there when my kids have my sale.
I use the old plastic or metal 4 gal. milk crates. They stack great if you position the rear end in the right angle. I have a stack about 6 high.
I am sure I will get some “FLAK” over my storage procedures for 9 in dropouts; I just put oil on the ring and pinion and bag them up tightly in a regular trash bag. Usually re-oil thoroughly and spin thru every 6 months to a year. I have a 3:89 Detroit locker,3:70 open, 3:50 open, and run a 2:50 open in my 32 cabriolet hi-boy,gm 5 spd, with a289 in Flatmotor!
When I bought my rear last year (Quick Performance) I opted for the plastic case for $40 to store my old rear. Think Jaz makes it, it says on their site. Most places like Summit charge $50 to $55 for the case.
Hey 55, Back when we had three Chevy Positraction 3rd members 3:78, 4:11, 4:56 and two cars to get either one, we took apart steel roller skates and we welded them to an angle iron, flat square shaped frame. My brother and I used this strong, rolling steel frame with the last 3rd member under the counter to keep it out of the way. That way, I never had to lift the thing when access was needed. It just rolled in/out. But, I figured it out that weekly exchange of the 4:11 for the 4:56 in the Impala was difficult rolling the 3rd member out to the jacked up car using a hydraulic floor jack. It was cumbersome and heavy. So, we used a sturdy milk crate with steel reinforced corners and put in that last 3rd member for under counter storage. The weekly roll out of the 4:11-4:56 gears was better done with the angle iron steel rolling frame under the 3rd member. Then I used the floor jack to move it up to the waiting hole in the rear axle housing. No more heavy, upside down, lifting from the ground. Jnaki Our 2nd backyard garage was converted to a working hot rod garage with a opening full size lift up garage door in place of the original small opening entry doors. (originally a family "rumpus room" for all pre teen/teenage activities.) But, space was still limited, so we were able to build a workshop counter with a shelf underneath and under that shelf, more space. No heavy lifting at any age was always a good thing, roll out for easy access. So, what to do today? If you have access to old sturdy skateboards, that device will hold the 3rd member and will roll easily where ever you want it to go. You can cinch it down with adjustable nylon straps for longer journeys. YRMV.
I roll 2-3 plastic supermarket bags around my Pontiac 3rd members. I rap racer tape around the mount and hook the handles to the ujoint. Takes up less room than buckets. Yes, I know I'm cheap.
