Art & Inspiration Any 1938 Ford Standards out there???

I see plenty of 37 and 39-40 Fords but not 38 standards.. A lot of people think they're ugly, but I like the "Art Deco" look of the 38 standard grille.. Any others out there???**clic pic**

I sure hope so! They are one of my favorite old Fords. I always regret not buying a restored rust free Washington Blue '38 standard out of a museum in western Illinois in 1998 for $7000. I offered less and they declined.

 

My 1st car was a 1938 Ford Standard 4dr Sedan, here in Oz they were not that common and at the time, 1969, I was 15 & had not seen any 38 Ford Standard cars in any magazines, 1938's were not that popular to be honest it seems and the Standard version even more so, I thought it was a strange one as the front end was different to what a 1938 Ford was supposed to look like and what it was took a while to discover...............I bought it for $30.00, had it for about 6mths and after discovering more rust than I originally thought decided to sell it for $20.00, this was 1969......lol........and ended up buying a Coupe, a 1940 Dodge Coupe and started down the Mopar road......it seems that over the years as every other early Ford model has been discovered and increased in value that eventually the poor old 1938 Ford Standards time in the sun has come........lol...........seeing any 38 Ford Standard now makes me smile and brings back nearly 50 yr old memories.........lol.......thanks.........andyd..

In Oz, 38 Standards came in a few body styles,
Club Coupe, 4 Dr Sedan and a Utility
The Club Coupe was only available as a Deluxe in the US, and the Utility in all forms wasn't available in the US.

After owning my 38 Deluxe Club Coupe for 30 years, I believe the Australian made 38 Club Coupe bodies were in fact carry overs from the 37 Model year, with sheet metal and dash changes to the up to date year.

 

This one was for sale last month at a car lot that specializes in hot rods and low end collectible cars in Maryville Tn. Still had original drive train, they were asking 15K.

 

Love the lines of the grill running into the hood. Whats ugly about that? Looks like a 37 jumping into warp speed!

 

Crustz was building a wicked 3 window a while back.....i personal love the front sheet metal of the standard ! Bring on some more pics !

Hey bryn jones, that's a solid tudor.. I'd like to have that coupe above.. That chopped phantom 3 window coupe is really cool and accentuates the "art deco" front end...

Most that get rodded don't have all the stainless out front or down the side. It really makes the car and it's a little ugly without it. They also get a little bit ugly with 40 style lights. This is just my opinion but I generally like em.

 

Not a standard but a deluxe I do love the Art Deco style of the 38s. Many people do hate the 38 but to each is own, there are many cars that I think are ugly as well.

As a 39 Std Tudor owner it's no surprise I like this. I gotta ask, how much do you "put up with" to have it that low? Mine's not quite that low and it hits the bump stops, and with anything bigger than a 5.50 tire (which I think looks too small) they hit the fenders on full turn. You too? Full wishbone or split? 4" dropped axle? I'm raising mine 2" overall to keep the rake, which I think makes all these "Deco" Fords come to life. Even a 37 demands a nose down attitude, yes? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a twin. The car is bagged. When aired out the front of the running board is about 1" from floor. Up I can fit my hand in the gap. The car also has a mustang 2 front clip, wheels are 15x6 with a 185x60x15 tire. No rubbing side to side. When down it rubs like help, can't even turn the wheel. The exhaust travels over the rear end. Want to re route it to bring the ass down another 2". For being bagged it is a really comfortable ride

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I never thought it might be M II and bagged. Makes good sense. I know we all put a value on stance but with these it's really a deal maker/breaker.

 

My 37 sits maybe a little higher than your 39. Shorty bump stops that I don't hit on a regular basis and I can turn full lock to lock..... Sorry for the hijack. Your 38 looks great, I like the added tail-light placement.

I bought a 1938 2dr Std runner in 1959 for $20.00. I had a 39 Coupe at the time, and thought I would use it as a parts car. However, I got an offer I couldn't refuse and sold it, because at the time I liked the 39 styling more than the 38.
I really like the design of the 38 Std front end, and the pictures on this thread really bring out how pretty these cars are.

About 15 years ago, I picked up a 38 standard tudor that my wife saw in town. I planned on building it for my Dad, he came over to see what I got and told me in plain English " that was the ugliest F'n car Ford ever built" . I didn't think so but you can't argue with Dad ( Marine Corp.) I tried to hang on to it buy money was more important so down the road it went. Sold it to a guy in Princeton Illinois and often wonder how it turned out. Mitch.

 

38 standard sedans used the 37 humpback body with different rear fenders protruding out past the package tray.. 38 Deluxe used the all new 39-40 style sedan body.. No sheet metal interchanges between standard and Deluxe models...
