Ohno, Lew, and Gonzales. Starting line action…In these early days, the chain link fence was the only thing separating the spectator to the race car.

Ohno, Lew, Gonzales A/Modified Roadster VS. the early version of the Ratican, Jackson, Stearns A/Altered. (112" model)

    Hey Gary,

The photo from January 1960 is the rootbeer color, Ohno, Lew, and Gonzales altered roadster. It was a local Lions Dragstrip favorite. There was a lot of competition in the modified roadster class, but this rootbeer color roadster usually came out on top.

Here they are in a race against the A/Altered (the early long wheelbase version) of the Ratican Jackson, Stearns Fiat team. These inter-class races were historic as it was the top A/Altered class winner vs the top A/MR winner. Watching and filming two different race cars and teams going against each other was memorable.

Speaking of the spectators standing so close to the starting line at Lions...there were "blast boards" or whatever they were called back then. Safety starting line "blast boards" at Lions? What was that lanky teenager doing not staying behind those blast shields? Teenagers…”What me worry?”

Normally I don't bother with Historic Images photos because of the big watermark, but maybe someone knows more about the story behind these shots of cars getting stuck in the mud at an "Autocross"?

Car # 102 is a '58-'62 NSU Prinz body stuck on some larger American V-8 chassis. Over to the experts!

  4. Britlings, Memphis and Pancho's in West Memphis, good memories! Lots of early sixties trips to the big city,
to Goldsmith's toy department for wind-up race cars, model planes and jetex jet engines, then lunch and a movie. I'm 71 today and it seems like it was yesterday.

Loubang, that pic of the chain drive truck, reminded of a truck my dad told me about that he saw as a young man. It was a chain drive , similar to the one in your pic, but it had a fixed sprocket mounted to the frame forward of the rear axle. They would haul a load with both chains on, then on the way back ,empty, they would break one chain and wrap it around the fixed sprocket and power the truck with one wheel ,driven through the spider gears, for a two to one overdrive. Don’t recall if it was factory, an add on kit, or back yard engineering. Bones

This is an interesting looking race car that likely ran at Sunflower Speedway in Brazil, Indiana in the 1920s. I have no idea who the driver is. Sunflower is usually listed as having been a Terre Haute track but in reality it was just off of the National Road (US 40) on the outskirts of Brazil. Ira Hall was one of the early stars there. In later years he used his racing fame to be elected the sheriff of Vigo County.

  17. Actually, more than you'll ever know. Six people with loaded handguns at BWI in just the past week. What did they have in mind?

I think what you see is a shadow line.

She may be able to reach the pedals, but I don't think she will be able to operate them. Move the seat up, miss.
