Mcmaster-Carr has a policy on shipping orders to Canada, they refuse to ship to a residential address.
They will only ship to a business or an educational institute.
The past few times I’ve ordered I was able to have the orders shipped to myself at the school.
If I was retired or something like that I’d be out of luck.
They do have a great selection of stuff.

Depending on how close to the border you are, there are plenty of "USA address" places to give you a US shipping address. I have one that I use all the time one interstate exit across the border at the Niagara Falls Lewiston crossing. Saves a bunch on shipping costs. Costs me $5 per package for a handling fee. Very reasonable IMO. McMaster-carr rules as a hardware supplier. No worries about questionable strength bolts.

I’ve used a shipping depot in Montana as a US address on large items that saved me a lot of money over buying in Canada or having them shipped to me.
But that’s only worthwhile when it comes to big items and big savings when you consider that I live about 7 -8 hours north of the border.

When I retire and move to BC that will be different.

  5. I've seen that place, can never remember the name.
Have you got a link ?
    Thanks.

  6. Wonderful company. I've told then I wish they ran the government.

I bought a lot of pieces from them when I was doing the purchasing for the maintenance department of a large fruit juice plant. I got a lot of stainless steel piano hinges from them and a lot of stuff that I only needed small quantities of. That they have just about anything you need hardware wise and that they will ship what ever quantity you request are serious reasons for dealing with them.

Though heading west gets pretty damp pretty quickly.

Not only damp but a long ride from the nearest road to the West. They did give us quite the greeting when we came in under the Golden Gate though.

Parts of the catalogs (both paper and online) I find very useful are the descriptions at the start of many sections that list details on the best sizes and materials to use for specific jobs. A go to source for me to get stuff not readily available anywhere else for well over 20 years now, both when I was at work as well as at home since I've retired.

Haven't ever had a bad experience ordering from them.

My catalog is probably thirty years old. I wonder if they will honor the prices in it ?

This road goes West, twice-a-week. The front 2/3rds is for containers. The back 1/3rd is a parking garage-like structure.

With minimal planning, it is easy to leave, in any direction.

For sure if you are that far north. I am only about 1 1/2 hrs north of the Niagara Falls crossing.

I ran a Toolroom for a testing laboratory. I ordered everything from MC or Graingers. Both great suppliers.

McMaster Carr business model is "satisfy the customer, not the shareholder".
They are a private company and do all the right things for the right reasons

The paper catalog I have has to be 30 or more years old as well. I borrowed it from one of the factories I was a maintenance man at. They had 3 catalogs, I figured they could live without one of them.
The difficult part for me is determining where in the book what I want might be located, and what name they might be calling it. I usually find it in the book, then go looking for it online. I should probably use them more then I do. Gene

Not many U.S. businesses get this kind of free advertising.
They should be taking notes from M-C.

Yup, ordered stuff from them and Bolt Depot last night. Got some aluminum spacers to use as a standoff for the original filter I'll be using on my flathead with finned aluminum heads, aluminum angle stock to use to attach the throw out bearing spring to the T-5 trans. adapter and flexible stainless tube brushes for cleaning the hard-to-reach tubes of the oil pump pickup and oil filter. Incredible selection. I live 15 minutes from Bolt Depot, so I can just run down and pick the stuff up after I order it on line, even if it's a single nut or bolt.

I've had a US mailing address for years here:
    https://www.cbiusa.com/
Good folks to deal with, they'll receive anything from an envelope to a car, everything stored inside. Prices are reasonable, three of my friends also have mailboxes at the same place, we routinely pick up stuff for each other as well as ourselves. It's about a five hour round trip for me, depending on how busy the border crossing is. It's absolutely worthwhile, lots of ebay sellers won't ship to Canada, cross border shipping and brokerage can be extortionate.

I ordered the wrong part from them. My mistake. Discovered it when it arrived. Called them and they said send it back. When I got the credit, they even credited the shipping cost when they sent it to me. And no restocking fee. Great company!
