Miller & Ryan's Hunt For A Camper...

Discussion in 'The Antiquated' started by Ryan, Apr 30, 2018.

  1. We did a lot of camping when my kids were little. It was a cheap way to get out and have some fun with the family. It even overflowed into my hot rod hobby because there were a few rod runs that would let you camp. I would have liked to have found an old Terry camper, but the X wife would have non of that, so we ended up pulling an old pop up camper behind the 40 for many years.

I would have much rather been pulling this........

Yeah, there's something fishy going on there... or, I feel like there is... I've done my research though and the seller has a good reputation. So, I just dunno... I'm now taking a different angle at the same trailer using a middle man of sorts. We shall see, but my hopes aren't high.

In any case, this process has really helped my get a feel for what Miller wants. He doesn't want anything "cute". Instead, he wants a trailer that looks "fast." His favorite are the clippers:

But he also really likes '57 Airstream caravaners with their double window:

If I had my choice and an unlimited budget I'd be all for a 24' Spartan Spartanette:

You just can't find reasonable priced Spartans that aren't total projects though...

Another we both like are 50's era Bowles Aero:

And finally, there are some more obscure brands that we like as well... Like this El Jay:

This whole process has already been pretty rewarding. I'm pretty proud of the little lad's taste in wheeled things. He really tends to dig the stuff that I do... and that's a damned relief honestly...

I'd want one with a bathroom. Not fun taking a shower in a public shower, or having to walk a 1\2 mile in the dark at night to use the can. Been there, done that.....

I had a 16', not sure what brand, I rebuilt it where it had been backed into a tree. It had a shower, toilet and sink in a closet sized area, plus a 3 burner stove and mini fridge. It was Ok with the wife and me and two pre teen boys.

Guess you'll be keeping the truck now to pull it?

  5. He already sold the truck.

  6. Half the fun is in the chase. The first one you found looked perfect. Canned H.A.M.B.

  7. Ryan,do you guys have a size in mind? How long is too long?

And from what you have posted you prefer the polished aluminum rather than paint, Correct? HRP

I think 22' is about as long as I want to go... And yeah, for the most part we both prefer non painted...

Man, I'd always be deeply tempted to drop two flatheads tandem inside that clipper, put a dropped axle up front, and make myself a 40's Rocketeer or Batman outfit!

Hahaha... I've never worked so hard to buy something as I did that trailer. I mean, it took a shitload of leg work... But it's done now and it was worth it - I don't know that I've seen Miller this excited ever.

  16. That's really cool....Miller got his very own trailer. Can't wait to see what he does with it.

That's a really cool trailer. Hows it setup inside? Hoping for lots of varnished wood...

Lots of aluminum... These were built to be super light and this one is in remarkable condition. It was restored about 20 years ago or so...

I've never seen clippers before. That is cool!

  23. Sweet Clipper!! IF I were Miller, I'd be sleeping in it as soon as it hit the driveway!!!

Just do it one favor...Have someone build an aluminum shroud for the AC! The white plastic is like a whitehead on the prom queen's forehead! ;):D

    Titled as a 1947, but I think it’s actually a ‘51.

Wow that thing is in excellent shape. Really cool design.
Are you going to setup your pickup to haul it?
