I spotted a recent 'historic' post on Instagram by Gasoline Magazine referring to the 'iconic' $1000 buck roadster they featured a few years ago. I messaged them for more info, but not heard any more about it. Anyone out there know anything about this car (or indeed willing to show off their own traditional 'low buck' builds)? In fact, how about a challenge to see who has spent the least amount of money building a safe road-legal traditional hot rod?

Was it Clark's '999' roadster? I think that was built maybe '05-'06. I'll see if I can dig a pic out.

If it’s the one I am thinking of the guy I met through a friend of a friend type deal. He wasn’t the one that bought it for 1K but the story goes it sold for 1K on eBay I think it was. Was built by harry westerguard? Back when.

  10. I believe this is the roadster they were thinking of. It was a Harry Westergard build.

999 pictured above was built for about $999. The front tires blew the budget. Total cost was $1200. By the time it was purple in Detroit I may have had $2000 in it. Another cool fact is we built it in 6 days. Lots of great people came together and had a great time. We did it just to see if we could.
The 32 roadster for $1000....that was just pure luck

Pretty hard to build to that budget when traditional tires are involved!
The 999 hot rod is really slick......no matter what the budget was.

This looks like the one in the Instagram post. It had wire wheels back. Then. Thanks for posting, it looks even better from the front!

This looks fantastic. It's not the one that I was talking about in the Gasoline Magazine Instagram post, but it looks more like it had cost $1000 to build rather than it was a good deal at $1000. Thanks for sharing this.

  19. Tex Smith built a dollar a pound roadster back when he published Hot Rod Mechanix magazine.

I don't remember the final total but it was a nice roadster. HRP

I nearly bought that Roadster. Pulled it up on eBay, pressed BIN and missed out by a few seconds.
