    Riverside Raceway 1959 afternoon sunspots

    Hello,

Back in those early Hollywood movie days, the films were perfect as far as the scene vs the sun. The faces were front lit, make up applied, and the background sun was shaded for clarity. As far as we could see, there weren’t any movies with the “Artsy” effects shown to the public. It was the film studios editing for the best angles and nothing to take away from the actors/actresses. No shadows, no facial lines, no background disturbances, etc…

When my brother and I went to Riverside Raceway in 1959, it was an all day, long drag racing trip. Filming from early a.m. to late in the afternoon was a contrast in color, action and effects. There weren’t supposed to be any “effects” other than action on the drag strip. I had to move the camera to make sure it was not just a still photo, but an action movie, whether it was me moving or the action on the Dragstrip.

It was not instant gratification with a finished “view button” like on our modern digital cameras, today. We had to wait a week for the films to be developed and then edited together to make a long drag racing film for showing on the 16mm movie projector.

So, needless to say, the end of the 1959 Riverside Raceway drags movie was a little disappointing when those pesky sunspots showed up and washed out the drag racing action. I thought I had taken some excellent action shots in the different classes from FEDs, Roadsters, to racers from the Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes.

But, guess what, the Hollywood movies started showing sunspots and other special studio effects to enhance the surroundings and actors/actresses. Backlit faces, cars, sunlight streaming into windows at different angles, etc. They were all techniques to enhance the actual action going on in the movie.

As bad as I thought those sunspots were in 1959, it is still part of the history of that long, cold, Riverside Valley drag racing day.
