Boy does this one bring back some great memories! For us it was a family project. My Mom and Dad put out a big pickle jar. If there was not enough money in it to pay for a day on the track, we didn't go that day. I sold newspapers and so had lots of coins, a lot of them ended up in that jar. For an 8th grade kid there was nothing more exciting than seeing how fast I could get that kart going. We didn't have the latest stuff, but the old Simplex kart and an 8 hp Power Products engine was fun even if the newer and faster karts were hard to keep up with.

That show shot is not very clear but that just looks different, almost cartoonish.
The side window looks much bigger than your example and am I seeing what looks like wheel fairings, maybe I'm seeing something totally unrelated.

Yeah. It's not the greatest picture. Flying Caduceus was my first thought when I looked at it. Maybe someone will come up with a better answer.

    Hey B,
Ratican, Jackson, Stearns was usually happy during the Lions competition in their class. They were usually the top winner in that Altered class. So, this photo may have been after towing back to the pits that they discovered a leak or two, but still won their class competition. The only time I saw any form of close race or the wrong end of the elimination race was when they went against others in the different eliminator classes. Then, they ran up against some stronger performers.

These early 1959-60 performances in So Cal in the Altered Class, built up to their U.S. National win at the Indy in 1961.

I wish this pic was in color. My family would visit OOB every summer in the 50's and 60's in our green 6cyl stick 4 dr '56 Chevy wagon. I bet that was it!

    England??

New Zealand. The plate FE7771 was probably issued in the late 1960s but is no longer on the register.

    England again??

New Zealand again. The plate on this car is the yellow type which was current from June 1961 to June 1964, which helps to date the photo..

    Hey Gary,

Nice photo from 1960 at Lions Dragstrip. Ratican Jackson, Stearns was a local racing group with later sponsorship by Reath Automotive, when Reath was still in the old store on 10th and Cherry Ave. That race car photo is the first black and white that I have seen since I filmed them at Lions Dragstrip in 1959-60 era. Ron Stearns told me that this configuration was the longer chassis version. By the time they had a new shorter chassis, they later, traveled back to the Indy Nationals in 1961 for their record breaking event.

I filmed them at Lions from the first time I saw that Altered. Then we went to the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960 and they had a great run all the way to the race against the Boudakian Bros Fiat Altered.

    Hello,

This is the Ratican-Jackson-Stearns Fiat A/Alt coupe. Every week my brother and I went to Lions, the racing just got better with new race cars and drivers. This dark blue Fiat was special. It was a fast Altered Coupe in a long line of Fiats in the pits. We liked the way it sat and then when it fired up, it sounded great.

The engine was a 1957 Olds 394 CI, built up to about 420 CI.

Even though, they were Lions Dragstrip and So Cal locals, we saw them race at the 2nd annual, Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960.

  26. I dig theses fins. One of the cars we had when I was a kid was a 60 Plymouth 9 passenger wagon.
