Jr. Fueler at Lions....lots of them ran here.

    SettoPostoian2.jpg
Setto Postonian races Garlits...I wonder if this is one of the two '59 meets that Garlits ran after blowing at Bakersfield and building a blown 454" engine to keep up with the California cars. When he first ran it, at Kingdon and then at Chandler, AZ, he did not run the nose. Both Postonian and Garlits are running carbs atop their 6-71's.

Bernardini Brothers street roadster...I think that this is either Colton or Santa Maria

Ed Losinski at Colton, probably '55

Mike Danylo at Pomona...this might have been Boyd Penington's car.

    Hey RS,

Nice capture of the old Hot Rod Magazine article. That was a long time ago. We were a couple of teenagers on a “long” road trip on a two lane road from our house in Long Beach to Riverside in late 1959. The best in the West vs the top Eastern racers was the main event. Since we were avid Hot Rod Magazine readers, we saw this modified roadster article and were much surprised that they were in attendance at this historic meet. Tony Waters was an original Bakersfield Smokers racer.

Right off the bat, the bright purple roadster stood out with the cool wire wheels sticking way out in front of the radiator. At the time, most modified roadsters were regular bodied roadsters with relatively stock chassis including a set back of the motor. This one was different. The runs down that “valley” raceway were pretty amazing, all day.

We did know that he was in the final race at the First U.S. Fuel and Gas Championships at the Bakersfield Famoso Dragstrip in March of 1959, barely losing to Art Chrisman.

So, this drag racing event was going to be a pretty amazing but, very cold day.

Early A.M. in the "Pits" at Riverside Raceway 1959:

    TONY WATERS TOTAL FILM:

Here is a long ago post in reply to Dean Lowe about the race car:

    Hey Dean,
(OK to add in this modified roadster in the sexiest thread, the Speed Sport Roadster included)
    upload_2018-4-30_5-42-44.png upload_2018-4-30_5-43-4.png upload_2018-4-30_5-43-18.png
Tony Waters light, purple, roadster was one of our favorites at Riverside and Bakersfield. That purple roadster was such a complete race car. It looked good, plus, it was also loud and fast ! The crew always looked sharp with their matching purple, Bakersfield Smokers, Inc. jackets over the all-white outfits. In those days, for the Top Eliminator trophy races, this purple roadster took on everyone, FEDs included.

It is too bad we never saw them race at Lions in Long Beach. But, at their home grounds in Bakersfield, We saw him doing well until the Speed Sport Roadster showed up during eliminations.

Bill Butters roadster, sponsored by Groh's Texico, in what was then Pico, CA. Butters and Dave Gerard would later run a series of roadsters and fuel dragsters...The "H" on the doors indicates that these roadster where running fuel, so this would have been before the '57 fuel ban.

Don Morgan, from Amarillo, TX, in 555 racing another gas roadster. 555 was originally the Waters and Murray Chevy-powered roadster from California. Don Morgan bought it and installed a blown Chrysler. It has now been restored back to its Waters & Murray form.

Wow to see a 6 cylinder yank all four wheels off the ground is really crazy.
Hope to he did not bent or break the chassis.

got any pics of an early 60's rail with duel(side-by-side) Pontiac (I think) engines. It ran dual slicks(4) too. Don't know the name of the driver coulda been Roy Gay?! Don't know.
Like most kids....I saw it in Hot Rod!

  25. It was Eddie Hill from Texas with the dual blown Pontiacs. He did run dual slicks until tires got better.

  26. Hard to believe someone could fuck up Norm's "Kookie Kar" this bad. :(
