Ray's Alignment took the car back in on Tuesday of this week, and we got it done right this time. They had to move the drivers side rear axle mount about 1/8 inch aft (used die grinder to oval out the hole as the provided 1/2 inch alternate mount was way too much of an correction) on the spring tab and the passenger side axle mount about 1/16 inch forward in order to get them both to come into less than 0.01° toe. Actually when they finished locking everything down the drivers side was at 0.000 and the passenger side was at +0.005°. Car is now traveling down the road with no perceptible crabbing and actually handles better than ever. Due to some complications will not be able to get the car to the Belvidere Heritage show this weekend, but will be picking up on the scheduled events by end of next week. Thanks for all your interest, and best of luck with your projects. Bob

NOTICE: Photobucket has just deployed an attempt to hold all users at ransom for $39.95 per month to allow 3rd. party access to photos that are in the users library. Unless the users account is upgraded to the most encompasing plan that they have, none of the pictures will be viewable by 3rd. party sites (HAMB is a 3rd. party site to Photobucket). I am working on a solution or work around for this problem. bob

I refuse to be forced into their rediculous payment schedule and have figured out that i can back into this an build a HAMB library of the posted pictures so that is what i am going to do. I have tested the idea at the bottom of page 6 and it is not all that much work. I will spend a little time each day reinserting the pictures working from the most recent posts to the oldest posts and eventually, will have all this corrected. If any of you want or need particular shots from other pages please message me and i will get them to you. thanks, bob

Hi to all and hope your weather has been better than ours (mid-West about 70 miles from Chicago). I have finished reworking the entire project and removing all the links to PhotoBucket. From all the chatter on the web I/we are among thousands that have been caught short by their greedy and very aggressive move. I profoundly hope it all backfires in their face. I will be removing all my content from PB as quickly as possible.

Was a car show weekend. First weekend in over a month that it was not raining. Took car to the Vets benefit car show in Loves Park on Saturday.
    Vets benefit car show.jpg
And then to the Fizz Ehrler Memorial - Turning Back Time show on Sunday. That was one hell of a show with almost 1000 cars entered and a range of exotics that I am not used to, including a tricked out Tractor - Trailer cab that took first place. Show took up all street parking, lot parking, and business parking spaces in a 10 block area.
    Sycamore car show.jpg
Took the picture above about an hour before the show started and glad I did, barely walking space once things got going. Got a couple more benefit shows I will try to support this weekend and then put the car in the garage till September rounds. Hope you all had a good weekend. Regards, bob

Photographer at the Sycamore car show asked permission and then was allowed to use our car as a backdrop for some of his model shots and this week sent me one of the shots. It's nice to see the car respected,,,, it only took a little while to wipe off all the body lotion and fortunately there were no rivets on the back of her jeans.... In the future I will ask a lot more questions before agreeing. Hope you all have a good weekend. Bob 20623615_879176442241614_1036476429_o.jpg

Well, yesterday was the last good sized car show for this season and the rains stayed away, sun came out, and it was a great day to spend some time with fellow car enthusiasts. I had been spot impaired by a Vista Cruiser, but he decided to leave about 1/2 hour into the show and for the rest of the time our car had good visibility even though we were in a back row.

Was a bit surprised at some of the guys that simply decided to 'reduce their inventory'. One friend is getting rid of a really good shape (unaltered, untouched) 47 Fleetline and simply said that he wants to reduce the frustration of deciding which of his cars to work on with limited time available.

Got a list started for work this winter with the car on blocks. Primary item is rear springs that have taken to creeking and squeeking. I have lubricated the bushings several times and recently found out that some WD40 will temporarily stop the annoyances when sprayed on the ends of the leafs. Don't particularly want to change springs as these are still in good shape but will explore laminates or other pad materials that will end the 'old car' sounds.
Still need to decide if it is a good step to replace the Accel with an injection controller that I can control the tuning of. May just see how the finances are holding up after the Christmas and New Year expenses are dealt with.
Hope you all are in good health and making progress on your projects. Regards, bob

Hi Eric. Good to hear from you. Hope you and family are all staying healthy and no where near all the fires and other headaches. Still watching your space to see what you are going to do about that flathead. Take care, bob

Hate to say, but the flatty is coming out and a dreaded SBC is going in its place.

Leaving the rest alone or going full upgrade route (power steering, brakes, AC)? My wife enjoys driving our shoebox, except for the noise (Hushpower mufflers with hooker headers),, but that's ok because I get to drive more that way. The 3spd gearbox in there will not take the torque of the sbc 305 or 350 so assume you will be changing that also. Going auto or sticking with stick? Regards, bob

The original 50 that I built, I had simply upgraded the flathead to a54 Merc.(I think that was 145hp or so) and still ended up with a collection of shreaded countershafts and synchronizer rings. I should have been smart enough to change the tranny to a zepher series but instead i used to brag about how fast i could drop the gearbox and replace the toothless innards.

Does anyone know where i can find a set of horns that do justice to an old American made car? On my agenda for this winter is, what i thought was a simple task - replace the Pegot sounding horns with something deeper in tone. Just spent about two hours listening to horn samples from the three most popular vendors and they, for the most part, all sound the same. Or am i on a goose chase? Seems that i need something in a pair of horns where one is lower than 200 Hz and the other is between 300 and 400 Hz. I can't put the old Ford horns back on unless i build a down converter (12 v to 6 v) and with as much current as they require, that will be one impresive chunk of electronics or (simpler method) a ribbon wound resistor that will need it's own special mounts. Appreciate any suggestions you care to offer. Bob IMG_20171125_105641260.jpg
PS... just noticed i have a couple of hoses to protect (hole liners) seems difficult to keep track of all the mop-up work created when cleaning up an engine compartment.

I have for sale a pair of 6V horns that came off my 51 Merc.
    Would they meet your needs?

19Fordy, I can work with them and will be interested if I cannot find 12V versions. As I noted, the high current draw makes it rather messy to deal with 6V horns. Thanks for the input, and I will get back to you for pricing and details if that is the way I end up going. Regards, bob

  17. Hey, Bob.................check this out.. I got these and I can tell you.... EVERYBODY pays attention when ya honk these... use with a relay....

Love it! Did not know you could get these any more. I see that they are either remanufactured, or simply recovered from bone yards,,,, but that's OK. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Do you have a set? Any idea how much current the total draw is? Bob

I’ve been using Cadillac and Buick horns on hot rods for years. They have a deep, loud American car sound. I pick them up at the local wreaking yard.

  21. Well, hell yes I put them in "The Judge" ! ! !.. Don't know current draw but with four of them, I just guessed they would need a relay... Mine are "original" - reclaimed from a junk yard, but I bought them off ebay or amazon.. don't remember which...

By the way, on my remote "fob" door opener system, I strung the antenna down along the lower edge of dash, tied up to some other wiring with zip ties, but still out of sight, and it works just fine... and put the radar operated security printed circuit board inside the shifter housing to go off (1 warning, then full alarm) if somebody even stands beside the car too long - don't even have to touch the car to cause an alarm....When the alarm is set, a relay disconnects the start wire to the starter solenoid...

LOVE what you are doing on your ride.. by the way, I may have missed it, but does she have a name ???

Paul. Called her Flashback 50 because I was going after the first custom that i ever built (top picture in my avatar). License plate frame also has 'Retirement's Restitution' in recognition for all the years that I was on the road roughly 70 percent of the time and much of it overseas. Bob

  23. WAIT ! ! you are doing the same thing I did... mid 50's.. the original '49 coupe with '58 pontiac tri-power..... duplicating, kinda.....

Yep. Kinda! I did my first one in 1956 (worked on it from 54 to 56 and got it on the road in 56) so I am doing what I did long time ago. How about you? Yours a repeat OR a new vision? By the way,,,, opted to go with platform that had tuned port injection instead of carbuerization this time. Still struggling with that as I cannot find anyone with the software for the ACCEL v5 controller and therefore cannot tune it the way I would like. May be switching to newer controller this winter. bob

Anyone out there ever put coil springs on back axle of 49-51 Ford? Got into quite a conversation with a fabrication specialist over the weekend and he has modified several cars (none like ours) by replacing leaf springs with coil springs and new shock suspension tabs. He claims that the ride is significantly improved (in terms of roll and lean issues when cornering) and the ?rods? that he crosses over eliminate all the 'hopping' when you tromp it. I am having problems with keeping the wheels planted when trying to get a little more zip into take offs. Due to the high torque at low rpm and the high gain in the 700R4 tx it is hard to do a 'quick' jump without breaking the tires away and that gets messy because the hopping starts because of the wrapping and unwrapping of the leafs. Any and all comments would be appreciated here. I was simply going to drop the rear axle and redo the lowering blocks that we malled up in the spring trying to get the crabbing out of the road track but this idea is interesting. Bob

Coil spring idea is 'out' as I realized that the change over would require a lot more components to keep axle in correct location if the spring dogs were no longer there. Larry machined a new set of lowering blocks with offsets per the measurements that i made of the mauled ones i pulled out. I worked out the displacement by measuring the portion of the original dog that had been displaced with all the baring of the axle. FB rear axle block location issues.jpg
To install the new lowering blocks I wrapped a nylon winch strap around the axle and use a hole in the cross frame stiffner brace on the passenger side (pulled axle forward) and wrapped around the bumper brace on the driver side (pulled axle rearward). Will not know for sure till I put the car back on the ground and take it out for a test drive but I did leave some slack for adjusting if the offsets turn out to be overcorrection for the dog walking issue.
Have noticed some fuel vapors after running the engine for a while and there is a build up in the tank so i am now working on venting the tank via a vent tube in the filler neck and a vapor hose line up to the intake manifold with a purge valve and carbon canister inbetween. If any of you have vented your tank would appreciate any advice that you can offer. I had replaced the venting filler cap with a fully sealed version while the car was undergoing it's primary transformation so I probably caused some of the problem, but did not like the idea of venting vapors to atmosphere. Regards to all, hope your projects are coming along to your satisfaction. Bob

Have gathered up and ordered all the parts to do the vapor control - tank pressure relief project. Here is a shot of the main components for the switchover.
    primary vapor comp.jpg
The small K&N filter is to replace the fresh air to valve cover plumbing so that the fresh air from the throttle body (upper) port can be sent to the carbon canister in case there is any residual vapor pressure from the tank with engine off the vapors will be ported to the air intake of the throttle body instead of directly to atmosphere. I found a canister that will fit in the cavity just in front of the firewall, over the passenger side wheel well inner fender. The fuel filler neck has been fitted (thanks to Andy Didio - Suicide Axle) with a vapor breather tube. The pinched area on the tube is additional measure to resist liquid fuel (splashes) from being drawn into the vapor line. This morning I used rust inhibiting primer/paint to seal off all the bare metal area that was used to prepare for the welding of the tube. Hopefully, by mid week, the Parker vapor hose i ordered will arrive and i will be able to proceed with the installation. Larry will be making a mounting platform to hold the canister in place. Here is a shot of the approximate position that i plan on installing the canister.
    Intended mounting location for canister.jpg
Hope all of you have a great weekend. Here in the midwest we are dealing with Mother Nature's perveted idea of a Spring Surprise - winter weather watch with high winds, rain, sleet, and possibly snow by tomorrow afternoon!!!!

Got the filler neck cleaned up and repainted and installed yesterday. Here is a shot of the neck now back in place. I need to determine a path for the vapor tube to get to the front passenger side firewall area next. IMG_20180414_143019124.jpg

Finally got all the hoses run and valves connected and canister mounted. Here are a few shots to show the vapor recovery system which, for the most part, got tucked into lower visibility areas.
    Vacuum hose routing 14.jpg
starting in the trunk behind the side panel, I brought the vapor hose through a smooth rimmed grommet and looped up high enough that fuel (splash, spray, overfill) cannot drop into vacuum hose.
    vapor connection 3.jpg
tucked the canister into the pocket of the front fender next to the cowling, and managed to get all the purge valveing worked out in that same area instead of sitting around the valve covers/intake manifold.
    vapor connection 1.jpg
decided to route the fresh air hose for the canister front side with the heater hoses.
    vapor connection 2.jpg
Have a couple of clamps left to install and the will be ready to connect the hose in the trunk and test the system.
Hope you all have a great weekend. bob

Testing completed on Wednesday, the 2nd. Satisfied with the results especially considering that the system arrangement is 'non-standard' from the standpoint of an existing vehicle arrangement like this. I ran four warm-up to cool down cycles while checking hose clamps and changing oil and filter between tests and in every case, opening the gas filler cap is now accompanied by a slight puff (probably 5psi or so) of vapor, instead of blowing the cap off the filler pipe. Here is a diagram of the arrangement that i ended up with in case anyone is facing the same situation (fresh air should have been labled filtered air). Can supply part numbers if anyone needs them. Hope all your projects are going well. Bob
ps. finally got the tires back on the ground after 6 months of being on blocks an I am again impressed with how low this car sits. vapor system installed.jpg
