  1. This is kind of a long story, so to keep it more simple, I will let the pictures tell most of the story and use less words. However, there are a few words that need to be said to explain the situation...

<<< Back in October, the love of my life, and the wife of my youth, became very sick. On November 4th, 2017 she was diagnosed with cancer. A few weeks later, I asked her for a date. Could we take a ride up Pikes Peak in the Hot Rod after you are feeling better? It has been 10 years since we were up there, and she accepted.

A few more weeks went by and I reminded her of our date on Pikes Peak. She said she wasn't going to be able to keep it. I was broken... things didn't turn out like we had planned, and she went home to be with the Lord on January 4th, 2018. Fast forward...

Please bare with me, this is the first time I've been able to tell the story. Saturday (4-14-18), was her Birthday, and I wanted to keep my promise to take her up Pikes Peak again, but the highway was closed because of snow and 50 mph winds.

So, we watched the weather and Sunday was looking good. We loaded up the Hot Rod and the family and went up to Pikes Peak together. It was nice weather down here in the Springs, but cold up on top!

I'll upload some pictures and hope you enjoy the ride... :)

  3. So sorry for the loss of your lovely wife. I don't know how I could bear that.
This run up the mountain is a big step in the healing process. May the Lord continue to comfort you and your family.

FWIW, my USAF son lives in the Springs. It's one my favorite places to visit. Hope to get out there in Sept for the hill climb.

I think that was a nice way to honor your wife. I'm sure the ride was bittersweet.

  6. Ah, gee, Montana1, that was hard to read. But thanks for having the strength to make the run and write about it. I expect she was right there with you. Take care .

  14. Thanks guys for all the kind words. A bittersweet moment is the best explanation I can think of ever.

The hardest thing I ever did in my life, was to kiss each other good bye... :(

But, I know I'll see her again, and it may be real soon the way things are going in this world, if you know what I mean!

    More pictures...

Our son and I stopping along the way for some pictures of the mountain behind me... The rest of the family had to ride in the van. :) Our youngest daughter and her family live in OH and couldn't make it out. :(

The car ran real good today, I just had to stop about half way up and turn the idle up just a tad. This is about 10,000 feet.

20180415_0060.JPG This is where the snow began. o_O

You did it right. I lost my wife of 50 years and 24 days October 2, 2017. I have been going back over old paths and the memories are great. You know that she is always with you.

Sorry about your Lady, but I'm pretty sure she was looking down on you that day. The healing process can take many forms and it's always better when family is around to lean on. Be Well and Best Wishes, Carp.

    You too, Bill.
    It's hard.

I'm glad you got to complete the drive up Pike's Peak, though I sure wish your wife had been able to ride along.

I'm ashamed to admit that I live within sight of Pike's Peak, and yet I've never done the drive to the top. Given what it looks like from my office window, I'm surprised to hear that the road is open! There's still plenty of snow on the mountain today!

  27. It snowed a couple of days ago and the wind has been blowing all week, but by Sunday they had it all cleared away and it was a good drive up and back.

The view was spectacular today! Our oldest daughter used to work on the Cog Railway as a tour guide and she said on a good day you could see the Denver airport from up here! But then, she knew what to look for.

The switchbacks made me think of the Race to the Clouds they have every summer up here. The videos they show on You-Tube of those guys and gals drifting around these hairpin curves, makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck! They say they average around 135 mph over the 15 or so mile race!

Some of the grades are as much as 10%, but the ole' Hot Rod just chugged right up them in 2nd gear. ;) I think we are just past the tree line here.
