  3. Racing was much different then.
First of all, there were dozens of strips, lots of cars but seldom a full count for class racing.
Say the Vette runs AA,MSP, it may very well have been the ONLY AA.MSP there.
And the dragster the only AA dragster there.
Gotta run somebody though, maybe run the two using a handicap.
One of the biggest myths is that back in the day everyone ran heads up. NOPE!
The two cars above might have met in the old Super Eliminator (this is my guess), if cars weren't handicapped, why even race? The fastest car in the whole field will be the winner.
The tree was programmed to give the Vette a head start, the dragster waits on the line, JUST LIKE TODAY. And there WAS a break out rule. Otherwise people would just cheat, Handicaps were the respective National records, IE:
AA/GD , 7.89 vs AA/MSP 10.22. The difference between the two times is the handicap. I just made up the times to illustrate the point. There WAS ALWAYS a way to handicap dissimilar cars, be it the tree, moving a faster car back several car lengths or whatever.
In the LATE 60's it was common for an AA/FD to run against an AA/FC, the funny car got a flat 1 second head start. Almost ALL racing was on a local level. For most of the 60's there were 2 or later 4 National events. The rest were local shows. THAT'S what made it so great!
