Since then I built this Y-Block for my59 Ford and with the3X2 intake on it the hood would not close.

I picked up a8"Ford rear end and got everything to rebuild it 3.80 gears, a true track carrier, all the bearing,drums and brakes. It was ment for this 50 Ford I sold and they did not want the rear

So I have taken it as a sign to build an RPU out of cast off and bad calls. There also a4"drop axles,some 90 fin Buick drums,3 speed overdrive trans and other part bough over the years for projects that are gone or went another direction.

I am going to try to build this one spending as little as possible. I pickup$400 worth of steel

And let the fun begin. First up the main rails.





I have chosen to build the frame from scratch to save as much as possible. Labor does not count it is for me this time. Plan to spend 2hrs a day and 3hrs on Saturdays and Sundays. That 16hrs a week.

I'm using2X4X3/16 tubing for the main rails.
The engine is a.030 272 Y-Block I found a set of nos power forged pistons, a NASCAR(ford grind), a set of hollow push rods, stainless valves, aluminum spring retainers(trying to lessen valve train weight so it can reve higher). Arp rod bolts and main studes.

King main and rod bearing. New cam and cam bearings rotate assembly was balanced

The tri power intake is set to run with2new Stromberg carbs.if it needs the third will buy it later

That's 4 hs on 1 side .when the frame is built will weld spreader bar in front so did not finish that part.

 

Best use in the world for parts is a car.
Looks like you are well on your way.

IMO...
if you can put your hands on one, grab a model A emergency brake cross shaft, dips down in the center,
makes a great front spreader bar...
also, upside down model A front frame horns as rear frame horns...pic.

 

They make good shock towers too

 

I also have a28 2dr sdn it gets
a331 hemi and will go on32 rails. I'll have to see what under it It stock now and is next year project

Tired of welding and grinding guise I will build the8"rear end next.

store bought rails are not in the cards for this one it being done on the cheep

 

I have been trying to find some parking brake parts for the8" with no luck and a29 RPU does not need an emergency brake any way.so it won't get one







Housing and axles cleaned new bearings installed


Rebuilt the carrer new true track unit, new3.80 gears, new bearings and seals.



All new brake parts down to the drums and wheel clyinder.



And together it goes

Keeping with the cheep theme I have these rim for the rear there Rocket racing ingnitors. There blems I don't see why.and some rocket salt flat for the front. Tires were free1 year old.


If in the future I decide to go another way then I can but for now the plan is cheep

 

Inside wheel width is 48"out side is 72".

A model a pu bed is 41"wide , and the frame at rear 40" so figuring 1.5"on each side for tire clearance.

I come up with a bed width of 45", 4"wider then a stock bed. Since I have to build one I don't think it will be that noticeable. Other option is different rims or narrow the rear and buy 2 axles....
Guise the bed will be 4" wider

 

Started to clean up the frount axle knocking down the seams the will drill 12 1"holes

 

Got the axle cleaned up no more casting lines or pitting.
Tomarrow it will be time to drill about13 1" holes then I can paint it


Grind

Gring some more

Bead blast

And wala a nice clean satin finish to paint

... 13 holes, eh?..guess you are not supersticious., I'm not either but I'd leave the center hole blank...lol,..nice project you have going there...

 

I have drilled many axles in my time but this one is kicking my but.
It usley takes about an hour I now have6tied up in it.
I don't know if I just got an axle that is extremely hard or if drill bits are junk
A dealt bit$35 cut 2 holes a Erwin the one I usley use$32 did not cut even1. Now digging up one of the old bits to sharpen it and see what happens.

 

I have a lot of trouble with hardware store and ebay/amazon (Chinese) bits over a quarter inch getting through anything thicker than 1/8" regardless of the number of steps.

 

This axle I hard.
Throwes off orange sparks when you grind it.
And the filing are magenet along with the axle
It polish up like chrome. What I'm wondering is if it is some type of stainless.
It acts like it but I didn't think they made a stainless I-beam axle and the magenit part does not jive for stainless.

I got the axle with a fram and everything was stainless in the kit.

 

Finley got the holes done17 one inch.





Started the first collars black then in a few days some dark red



Glen came by free labor put him to work pulling the cowl apart










Will need to build some lower patch panels


Gas tank look solid and clean in sidemy use it.



Now just a pile of parts that will fit in the bead blasting cabinet

 

Yep he Wil be back Tue to bead blast the parts.than its time to build patch panels.
Cowl was from a sedan. May leave5-6" of windshield posts. But have not decided yet.

 

i have used the '28-'29 cowl's upper hinge to attach a rear view mirror...
