Projects My 1941 Ford pickup build thread, 303 Olds

I bought this last summer.
I intend to start on it when I make some room for it.
This will require a bit more than a wash and buff..but what fun would that be?

My plan is to use this 1950 Olds 303, 3 spd manual trans I picked up (it came from a nicely running car).
I was able to also get the driveshaft, and steering column, so I will be attempting to go the "three on the tree" route with this.

 

that motor is gonna be cool in that truck..

 

With that Olds motor and steering column, you really need the dash too... hint, hint... LOL!

I'm in no hurry..gives me an excuse to go to the swap meets.

 

Looks like the bed and rear fenders are in good shape. That stuff is usually wasted.

Yeah, I'll agree the price is a bit steep and I'm always leery of 'restored' bits.... but he does have a 'best offer' option...

I removed the bed, doors, glass, and the cab is loose (I'll keep it on, until I have a chance to mock up the Olds engine).

I'd read on here where the starter would interfere with the steering box, naturally I wanted to see for myself.
Realizing my options are the starter changeover/switchover adaptor or mini hi-torque starter, I will more than likely go the hi-torque starter route.

 

What would it take to move the engine location a bit to the passenger side?
Looks to be room over there for some movement.
Just something to look at... better to evaluate it now than think of it later... like many of us often do!!

 

The first picture I posted shows the drivers side with the starter right up against the steering box..what I didn't show is the passenger side (where I had to move the engine over just to get it in at all) the engine is shifted way over to the passenger side at that point.
The third picture of the truck from the passenger side does show there's room, but I had already removed the steering box/column by that time, so it could be centered.
I agree about evaluating all of the options now, before the real work begins.

I removed the cab, and created a dolly to put it on.

It is pretty solid, small rust areas cab corners, floor area in front of seat.

 

I bought the Hurst style of engine mounts, they were too short, too narrow for the frame rails, and placed the engine too far forward (apparently they were for something other than a '40 Ford.
I added on to them, and changed the angle to place them where they needed to be, placing the engine in the proper spot, with room for the radiator, and placement to firewall.

 

Next it was time to create transmission mounts. My idea was to hopefully use the stock clutch/brake pedal assembly.

 

So far I am digging everything about this.

nice find on the good running/clean 303, and especially that 1950-only trans that can use a normal shifter, versus the 51-up type.

you will love that Olds with a stick... I cannot say enough on the torque and reliability..and it was such a "most wanted OHV8 setup" back in the day".

(and, I agree on using the mini starter)
