The Pontiac is the best for a mild custom, but the Lincoln is a Coast Highway Cruizer. Top down, a couple of 'friends' along for the ride. A stop at the Malibu Inn (when it was a great breakfast, and Hollywood spotter restaurant) for breakfast. Drive up to Oxnard and a blip inland until Ventura, back on coast up to Santa Barbara, stop light always got you. Continue the drive with a possible lunch at Morrow rock, then a night stay at a cabin near the beach where you could watch the sunset and hear the waves in the evening.....
    Just saying

'61 Impala or Belair all day long. See Professor Moriarity for reference.

As much as I like the Pontiac, for me for 1961 would have to be the Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 or maybe Buick Invicta. To me they have some of the best lines inside and out.

I like all of the GM offerings for '61.

But if I could have just one, it would have to be the either the '61 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Holiday 2 door Hardtop Holiday Coupe or the Super 88 2 door Hardtop Holiday Coupe.

    my 2 cents...

  13. Not a convertible but I would take Zocchi's '61 Olds all day long. I love pink cars.

Heres a custom '61 Ventura. Been a low riding custom for decades.[IMG]

If chrome and tailfins send you then it's got to be the 61 Chrysler

61 Cadillac - 6 window sedan, all the windows down, stock interior, the lights on all four door panels is just right.

61 Ventura my all time favourite factory car. Nailed it perfect. 61 300G, the most beautiful luxury car ever. Had to wait until 62 for the Dodges.

I agree. Dodge or Plymouth. Either of these cars offer the greatest potential for improvement. Almost anything you do should make it look better. What's the point of customizing a car that already looks good?

If I had a choice I would roll back the calendar to 1960. Ford, Chrysler, Pontiac, Lincoln, Cadillac all made a statement that year. So did Mercury Chev Olds Buick DeSoto Plymouth and Dodge to a lesser extent. In 1961 they all backed off quite a few notches in looks and personality in my opinion.

The one car that did not take a backward step was Thunderbird. The 61 was quite different from the 60 but at least as good looking.

Not the best quality pictures (I scanned an old American Rodder), but I've always liked this one: Ar 1 (1024x692).jpg Ar 2 (1024x727).jpg

I didn't even think of the '61 T-bird until Rusty O'Toole mentioned it but yeah, that was a great design, a real spaceship in it's day and damn fast with a 390 as well. Although my love of Pontiacs and Chryslers make me still rate it #3 on my list.

LOVE the '61 Imperial, too. It's like everyone else's luxury marque was going for toned-down minimalism and as Chrysler was dragging Exner out of the studio in a straight jacket he got one last chance to crank the crazyness knob up to 11 and that's what we got. Well played, V-E.
