And not only are the cars out of line but both photos are very recent as well. The same goes for the shots of the Purple People Eater. It is a relatively recent build and the photos are from the last few years.

LowKat: Dang that orange ‘32 at Allentown sure had me lookn’ real close. Unless it’s a former version of mine, I doubt it’s the same car? I have been trying to track my cars history to no avail for going on 50 years... : ...???

LowKat The photo of the 999 car had a flathead, on nitro in it and it was quite a runner at 10.70 in the quarter. Bringing back memories.

The body is a recreation of the Kenz muffler body! Wayne Ewing only made the one original body for Ken Crawford!

Mike Sforza's dragster circa 1967. Mike built the "Patrician" dragster and was partners in Hennys Welding, and S and P speed shop in Jamaica NY. Anybody know of Mike, Hennys or the dragster I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks for another great trip down memory lane!

I miss these days more all the time and today's drag racing just does not what I remember.

Apparently Bob Brooks was associated with this Bantam-bodied coupe...I wonder if it is the former Reath-Maillard competition coupe that Dave Crowe drove to a bunch of track records...(it is in an above post of Colton, racing a bike)...

  25. Thanks guys for keeping the best thread on the HAMB going.
Love how the Bantam above still has the door handle! No glass body there.

It is, they actually held the Standard 1320 record for C/GS against a lot of Chevy-powered gassers...also painted orange.

    Hey Guys,
Speaking of the C/GS class... Here is my latest tribute to one of the great racers from the Midwest. Mike Marinoff was a big influence on our backyard 40 Willys build. His 55 Chevy ripped up the dragstrips during the 59-60 era, with different set ups to qualify for the competitive Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes.

When we were young teenagers, it took a lot of reading magazines and newspapers to get information on what was going on all across the USA. The local, So Cal, weekly Drag News paper was the most comprehensive reporting news for us. It was our library of drag racing information. Sure, the hot rod and custom car mags were interesting, but that information was three months old by the time it got to the magazine racks at the liquor store.

In 1959, we were still racing in the A/Stock class with the 58 Chevy Impala. The car was still competitive and getting faster. But, we could see the other classes racing at Lions and all over just by reading the Drag News weekly paper. We were getting to enjoy the likes of Pittman/Edwards, Junior Thompson, Al Hirshfield, and Doug Cook in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Classes. They were innovators and expert builders/racers.

But, one car that influenced us was the very neat, red/white 55 Chevy Bel Air from the Midwest. It was a record setting Chevy in the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class from somewhere in the Midwest. (a record setter from somewhere other than So Cal?) We had seen it in B/W photos, but never in person. When we went to the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960, this car was in the pits in all of its Midwest glory. A newspaper icon in the flesh.

    Jnaki

The following is a tribute to an influence for us young teenagers. That car made us see that other racers from different parts of the USA also had similar ideas. They were making noises with their builds in the drag racing world. We wanted to race against them…

A big old 55 Chevy making noises in the C/Gas and B/Gas classes from where??? We wanted to be in that competitive class for our continued 40 Willys build.

Sounds from the Detroit Nationals, circa 1959. Riverside Records 2nd edition…
    Thanks, Paul

(Mike Marinoff was from the Milwaukee area and raced at Cordova, Illinois as well as other Midwest area dragstrips.)

    Thanks, Don

The dragster that I have now when Mike Sforza built and raced it. I think NY national speedway staging lanes around 1967. Car is still for sale rolling chassis 6K.
