Headed down to Huntington Beach to donut derelicts and the weather is great. After coffee and a donut I’m heading back up PCH to Long Beach and to my surprise there was a car show at the pier and it continued up Main Street HB. I got a great parking spot and headed out to take a few pics.... Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.[/IMG]
Wow! Great pics and sounds like you happened up on a great day. Lots of great lookin rides, but I see maybe a unique lookin little buick stickin out down there, any chance you have any other pics of it? Is it a gasserized/street freakish deal with a surfboard and hood layin on top? Wacky or not, some things are just interesting, just because.
Wow it was 43 and breezy here today, those cool cars and palm trees were just the "shot" I needed today! KK
LBCD photo Nice !!! It fits the background perfectly… Hey LBCD, As always, you have taken a ton of great photos and were lucky to be at that event. From 1961-74, that place was like home to me. The pier, itself, was a big draw for most people. But, along this whole coast line area of OC, this was the best place to surf great waves. It was better for more experienced people while your photo shows the other parts of Coast Highway 1 that shows some places for those just learning on slower rolling waves. LBCD photos In the old days, when we were just learning, we were able to park along the Coast Highway at the long stretch known as the “Cliffs.” This was a place to see all sorts of woodies, station wagons, vans, VWs, hot rods and some cruisers with the boards stuck in all sorts of places, just to get to the beach. Yes, our black, 1958 Impala was here for several months until we got better. We knew the pecking order at the pier and our abilities. Most of the time, the waves were gently rolling ones that allowed learners to get better and better with each ride. The whole 3 mile long shoreline from Bolsa Chica Beach to 9th Street was considered for early beginners and learners. The hot locals went to the HB pier and the Santa Ana River Mouth next to Newport Beach. LBCD photo By, 1961, my 40 Ford Sedan Delivery did not see this portion of Huntington Beach, as we had already graduated to the faster, larger pier waves. 1962 HB Pier Back then, it was a little embarrassing that the other guys in the water kept reminding me that someone on the pier was taking movies of me riding waves. That someone was my dad. There were times that he had followed us from Long Beach and sneaked out onto the HB Pier for his “undercover movie taking escapades.” Many years later, we thank him for keeping the flame alive, all of these years later. Jnaki Sometimes it pays to get up early and go to those car events. Great coverage and photos, LBCD. Nice B&W with effects, could have been taken way back then…
Sorry wish I had a better pic but this is the best one I took. Thanks Jnaki for the cool surf film! I have surfed there countless times, it can be pretty sketchy on big days! amazing car! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
You made surfing look easy, That was so cool and seemed more real without music, Thanks for sharing the vid and story..
Great pictures- Here in Mass. it snowed overnight. Went to a Model A swap in long underwear. It's just not fair.....................
I parked in a 20 minute parking spot across from the HB police substation on Walnut so I basically walked through the show fast and took sporadic pics with 1-10 cars in each pic. You are right, there were some awesome cars there and some that I probably didn’t get in pics but it was early and cars were still parking down by the sand. I spent a lot of Saturday nights playing music in Gallaghers back when it first opened up to around 8 years ago, there has been some building going on down there....beautiful downtown!
