I don’t know- - -just does nothing for me. Not judging anybody’s work- - -but what’s the point, did one guy design the front and somebody else did the rear. I’m a simple guy and still believe, it was to take a great design, then ENHANCE IT!!! Even padded wheelswells don’t help. Jus my opinion. Am I missing something? If this was to keep adding to a beautiful style for the sake of garnering more points.....it’s, just wrong. Sent from my iPad using H.A.M.B.
I thought it was so darn cool.... I think it was started by Buick in 1953 the Red Skylark's had White fender wells, and the White Skylarks has Red fender wells..
I wondered if anyone was gonna post a Skylark. They carried it through 54 with colors other than white, but the white looks "right" to me;
We went down to the HI Way dept and a couple of guys gave us a pail of white paint that they used to stripe the roads and painted ours. That showed up good at night It was thick and lasted a long time. Sent from my SM-J327VPP using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Lol! I just put the wipers back on and the acorn covers are in my glove box. I've been running 15+ years without them and just using RainX It worked ok but I'm ready for wipers so I can get back to driving it every day. The covers will be back on eventually but not this time of the year..
I powder coated my pickup wells white more for the engine compartment side than the wheel side but get both effects.
Dadgum it!! This is what I get for falling behind on the custom board and just catching up on the threads I'm already following. Now I'm gonna have to see about painting my wheel wells before Austin next week Mick.....thanks!! LOL
Two weeks is plenty of time to get it done. If you want we can wait until we get down to Austin and just do it in the parking lot.
....I have one....we are leaving for Austin early and hitting the Round Top Antique week. LOL Now that is a great idea...nothing more traditional than painting on a car in the lot of a show. I'm in....will have paint on hand and lets do it at the show!!!

The photo above was shot about 1967 or so...and those wheel wells were not painted white, they were rolled and pleated Pearl White vinyl, front and rear, including above the rear end via chromed snaps. When we found this '57 on a used car lot, the wheel well upholstery was long gone, but it was still snapped in place above the rear end. That's what some of the "older" guys did around here in the 60's get their hands on road stripe paint. I think you can buy it at ACE or paint stores now for striping parking lots. My old 51 Merc came with those small truck clearance lights with the little brackets on them up under the fenders but the wheel wells weren't painted when I got it.
I had asked the local old timers about this when I was a kid, looking thru those old magazines I got. They stated that back then this area was more drag car oriented then customs. He said all the local drag cars had their chassis painted white to check for stress cracks (ala some guy named Jenkins from Pa.) and a lot painted their engines flat black to make easier to see oil leaks....
Not that it matters one damned iota what my opinion is but I'll write it anyhow. That black 57 Ford is the absolute best custom 57 Ford I have ever seen. Also I have always thought the '53 Buick Skylark was the greatest "factory custom", to come out of any major brand. Then they ruined it in '54.
