Collecting parts for my 36 Ford PU. 49ba flathead with a s10 t5 tranny with 3.75 first gear.
I have access to a 40 passenger car complete bango rearend with I believe 3.7? gears. Can I just switch out the whole setup or would it be better to just buy a ring and pinion for the 35 in the ratio I want. I haven't converted to open drive shaft yet so spline difference in pinion isn't a problem. I've never had a banjo apart and the cost of the 40 rear end would be about the cost of the new gear set for the 35. The 35 already has hydraulic brakes on it.

  2. You can use the '40 center or you need to weld on the tabs for the '35 radius rods.

What he said can work. You could use the center section and axles from the 40 with the trumpets from the 35-36 and be in business. 40 will have the 6 spline pinion vs 10 spline in the other. Before you do all that, verify the ratios in both units to be sure it's worth the work.

You can just switch out the whole rearends. The 40 might be an inch wider though, IIRC.

^^^^^The ‘40 spring perches are different.

As mentioned earlier, you can put the ‘36 housings on the ‘40 center and axles, but you’ll have to use the ‘36 differential bearings. You’ll also have to reset the back lash and bearing preload.

Yes the perches are different, but if he just unbolted the spring clamps at the crossmember and the clamshell at the transmission, he can slide the old one out and the 40 right in.

He is installing a T-5. He can't just slide it in.
I would use the 36 rear bells and radius rods. Get an open drive conversion and use the 40 6 spline center section.

Oops I missed the T5 part. Never mind.

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing no one is in favor of getting and installing a new gear set in the 36 rear end.

    That would work also.
