Hello,

Green? How about multiple shades of green on a 39 Chevy daily cruiser sedan? It probably won’t matter that different colors will show up on this car photo in the afternoon of St. Patrick’s Day. It will all be green, then blurry. This photograph taken on a very cold morning, somewhere in the foothills near Pomona, CA is older than 45 years old. The photo was shot using a 2.25 x 2.25 Mamiya Pro Twin Lens Reflex Camera with standard dual lenses.

The film was Ektachrome by Kodak in a color slide format. I am amazed that the clarity is still good after all of these years. If you compared the size of the color slide vs a standard 35mm color slide, you will see why the images are so clear and clean.

It was so cold, that gloves, jackets, sweaters were the mode of the morning. I was not sure if the results would be good, just because of the cold, shivering photographer. Sorry, I do not have any other shots of the same car. Our old slide collection somehow, mysteriously disappeared over the years as the office cubbyholes got cleaned out and moved.

This larger format color slide has advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is clarity of the object. One disadvantage is keeping such a large surface dust mote free for printing or digitizing. As much as there is to get from large format photography, it became too cumbersome for action shots or portability. When the larger 6x7 format cameras started hitting the scene, it was like shooting with a small 35mm camera, but slightly larger.

Aside: large format cameras:
My dad had a 4x5 Graflex Speed Graphic camera sitting in his closet. It was huge, had a bellows and separate film cartridges with light blocking slides. It also had the coolest external flash attachment with popping out finished bulbs that flew across the room. Needless to say, those quick on the spot, cute family photos were not around, but there were plenty of “posed” shots.

A heavy camera, the flash attachment, the accessories all in a hard shell suitcase did not make for quick set up photos. But the negatives were huge and super clear. (When I was little, on rainy days, I would play with the big bellows going in and out, and playing shooting games with the flash bulbs.)

I was driving the '51 the other day, sitting in a sea of silver, white or black vehicles I realized that solid colors of any kind of pretty unique now.

 

This is my first hot rod wish I still had it.
