Projects 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Rustoration

Not on here-it's just going to stock and I'm not clear if such things are frowned upon or not. I'll PM you a link. I just thought it'd be of interest as mine is a '61 Chrysler Newport.

 

Glad to hear you're getting back on the Buick, too much progress to give up now!

 

Slowly picking up where I left off. I'm trying to decide what to do with these "strut rods"
I bead blasted them and I was thinking of just filling in all the rot with weld, but then the threads are still bad.
I can't put it in my lathe. Ideally I would have machined the bad part off and welded on a new section.

Your buick starts with a cummins and ends with an ls throw in a clip job for fun and I might be able to guess why its a ghost town.

 

Probably got burnt out with all his projects and needed a rest.

Hey guys, I’ve been so busy with my towing business that I haven’t touched the Chrysler. We haven’t forgotten about it, it’s just not top priority right now.

Last year I had a lot of spare time on my hands waiting for calls.
Now I run around like a nut all day.

I really miss working on the car.

I have done a lot of other fun metal work. I rebuilt basically the entire bed on one of my Rollback’s. I can post up some pics of that process if you guys wanna see how I did that.

Glad to see you are still around, I was starting to worry. I understand about work getting in the way of the fun stuff. Seems that I am in in 18 wheels all the time instead of under 4 wheels....

 

Sometimes life gets in the way... But rest assured we are patiently waiting to see the end result of all that hard work you put into the 'Yorker...

Being busy in a towing business is good for the bottom line. We'll be here when you get time to get back on the Yorker.

 

Sorry guys no Chrysler action, but here is some work I just wrapped up on the 57. I was going to start a new thread but I figured I’ll just add to this one.

Late 70s when my uncle first painted it.





Pulling it from it’s 20 year hibernation. Parked in 86. Exhumed in 06.



Car sat outside for a long time as my fathers daily driver for 10 years up to 86. Sun baked the lacquer paint from roof and trunk.

Had the rear glass tinted.





My friend buffed the old lacquer. It came right back and matched the new paint. My uncle said lacquer always comes back.

Strut rods are structural. They keep the flimsy lower control arm oriented the right direction. Yours are absolutely rotted away and need to be replaced. Don't weld them up or try to make any repairs. The first good pothole is going to bend or snap those. They are easy to find at wrecking yards. Call @big M to get a price.

The '57 looks great btw...

 

What kind of color coat did you use, laquer ?
Looks great!

 

I decided a while back to find new ones. As you said I didn’t want to risk it.

Thanks! I don’t know. I think it’s acrylic urethane. I went to the paint store and said give me a quart of black. Lol. I can verify it is single stage.

Nice paint. Tinted glass makes it look evil.

 

Thanks. That’s the overall consensus. Evil. I plan to do the sides as well. Just not as dark.

Hey!
I know I’m late to the party here. I just found this and read the whole thread.

This kind of stuff is really life changing for me. Haha
I grew up in northern Minnesota and I just remember seeing my parents walk away from cars because of rust.

At some point I found out it wasn’t that big of a project to weld in patch panels. I have a project that is more rust than metal. Once I added up all the patch panels available it was way more than I had paid for the car (or could afford).

Seeing somebody make all these pieces themselves gives me so many ideas of parts I can make and progress my project without going broke.

My point is: Awesome work! Thank you for taking the time to take all the pictures and post them.

Hey guys, been a long time. Almost 4 years. Went by in the blink of an eye.

Didn’t want to reawaken this post until I was seriously going to work on the car again.

When I started the Chrysler I was a few months into opening my own towing business. Been running my balls off. Love it. If you ask me I haven’t worked in four years.
Built some other cool stuff in the mean time.
Bought a big ass shop. Had a baby.

Finally getting back on the car.

Started where I left off. Big hole in the firewall.
I want to get the firewall and front floors done so I can bolt the k frame back on permanently.
