Both cars are the Forsberg brothers (Denny and Jerry). In the winter of 1959/60 they sold the Model A (to Davey Uyehara) after purchasing the Bantam body and built the frame for it at York Fork Lift where they both worked.

Another recently posted shot (#1191 in this thread from early January) And it is still the Harrell Engines car that preceded the Winged Express.

A friend of mine just picked up a Modified Roadster, with a '23 body and full nose section. It has been in hibernation for 20 plus years, he brought it by for some welding. It will be fun to watch Rocky and him, side by side this Summer ! IMG_1297.JPG IMG_1299.JPG IMG_1300.JPG IMG_1301.JPG

The steering looks very unique. Care to tell us more about it? Forward mounted P&S box?

Love this site. Never carried a camera at all the old races & car places; glad someone did. Sure wish I had that gold pickup - sweet & chrome rims to boot

Three shots of the Nicholson Brothers Bantam-bodied roadster. Initially it handled so badly that Pomona management banned it until Harold could figure how to make it go straight. It ran a blown GMC (and maybe a Chevy 6, according to some reports). The first and third picture were taken at Santa Maria, while the middle picture shows Harold racing "Big" George Burkhart at Paradise Mesa. "Dyno Don" Nicholson is at right in the bottom picture. Harold Nicholson would lose his life at San Fernando in '59 driving a flathead powered dragster owned by Pat Akins and Ray Hawkins.

    Hello,
Back then, it was simple and fun. It was almost run what you brought to the drags, straight from the street. Yes, the idea of street roadsters driving right into the drags was excellently displayed by Dean Lowe's ideal RPU. That RPU was the envy of our high school group. Who was this high school kid that drove the red RPU and got a cover of Hot Rod Magazine in the early 60s? Ride the streets, race at the drags, that was simple enough.

Near lane is Tom McMullen in what went on to become one of the most iconic hot rods in history.

    Hey Roo,
McMullen racing the early version of the Jim Cassidy/Junior Thompson street roadster? That big hemi street roadster seemed like a handful with all of that power in a light chassis/roadster set up.
Junior Thompson always handled that power well and the results were the tops in the class at Lions.
