Just found this on the web while doing an Emory Collins search. Too early for him I think, can someone ID the bobtail Miller? I think it may match one that was raced locally. Bob

 

I can look it up in my Miller book but I suspect you will have an answer before I can go all the way through the book. As a long shot didn't the Golden Submarine look like that after it was rebodied?

 

I thought it may have been this car, but doing a HAMB search found out it is really this car, that Michael Ferner posted back in 2010. Bob

 

Not really too early for "Spunk" Collins, as he was already racing by then, but didn't get his hands on this kind of machinery for several more years. Both the #4 and #40 cars in the last post are pretty similar, having been built in 1924 around the old 3-litre (183 CID) straight eight engines of 1922. The #4 was the car Ira Vail took back east and later sold to Charlie Ganung; it was apparently custom built bodywork on a 1922 Durant/Miller frame. The #40 was built especially for Sig Haugdahl and IMCA impresario Alex Sloan (who probably footed the bill), and later often used by Fred Horey; it was built on a standard '122' frame with standard bodywork cut down at the rear. It later ended up with the 183 CID DOHC Duesenberg engine, ex-de Palma, and I think Swede Anderson drove it in the early thirties.

 

The photo of the #40 Miller was taken at Fargo, North Dakota and that is Fred Horey with his legs crossed and seated on the rear tire.

 

This is the Ira Vail 122 MILLER after a Duesenberg straight 8 was installed by Larry Beals. As Michael mentioned above the Fred Horey car also got a Duesenberg later in life. Were there more Duesenberg engines out there, were they cheaper less complicated, what was the reason for the swaps? Bob

 

I remember reading somewhere you could buy a Duesenberg Racing crate engine for $700. Of course a Model T Ford car was around $250 then.

And people think factory crate engines are a relatively new phenomena.

 

Speedy Bill's collection has one, did they make a single and DO 183? I don't know much about Duesenberg race engines. Bob

 

The Duesenberg engines I ever saw were SOHC!

Duesenberg built one DOHC 183 CID engine, and generally changed over to DOHC for the 122 (lower picture in post #10754) and 91 CID racing engines (top picture). The Larry Beals car got a Model A Duesey engine, mainly because it was cheaper I guess.

Speaking of fakes, here's the "Fake Duesenberg" (actually a crossflow-headed Ford - rare in and of itself) I'm using in my admittedly fake replica champ car.
