Doug I have been toying around with the idea of using the roadster to build a fenderless AV8. Don’t know how happy dad would be with that. Haha.

V4F.......Since you didn't mention it, is the T5 and quick change of the open drive variety, or has the transmission been converted to work with the torque-tube?

That thing is really bad ass. I love it. Did you buy it like that ? Or build it? Do you have any other pictures of it? I am looking for a nice coupe. I have a banger RPU pickup I been working on. Needs painted yet. Talk to you later Steve. Bob................. 006.JPG

I'm new, and my old motor is still completely stock, but I guess I'll jump in. IMAG1495_1.jpg

@winduptoy I have a ‘30 Chevy sedan so it’s a lot like a stocker A. The value of the A sedan should pay for a nicely built engine for the coupe. Having the floor space in the garage would be nice. Decisions decisions.

  12. You and the others looking for a Quickchange would do well to consider Derek Thomason's offerings with that regard. Derek gives you a product that not only is affordable; but is a heckofa lot better and cheaper than the "Original" broken, worn out, welded up junk that is found in "Swap Meets"!

You are correct in the good quality of Derek/Judys' kiwi model a quick change.
Unfortunately, they do not make their QC units available anymore. 'Too many other projects', he says.
I run the model A version for years now.
BTW...there is a lot of talk spread about , how noise a QC unit is said to be. Mine never makes a sound, maybe something wrong with it ?

If you put a V8 in it it will be different just like everyone else's. I just checked with your Dad, he says "Build a hot banger."

You are prolly right. He would like the Hot banger. Would like to use the Super Winfield Head I have. Wondering how it will behave on a street application car. As near as I can tell it’s like 8:1

I know you have lots of driving options and I'm in the warmed up for the coupe camp, if the truth be known.

So, I am building a banger with an enclosed driveline, T-5 conversion for my '31 Vicki.
The driveline needs to be shortened up 7".
My question; you guys that have done this, where did you take the material out of the torque tube to shorten it up?
I'm not wanting to use the first attempt for practice...

  22. WOW! I didn't know that Derek quit making his Model A and V8 QC's. I think, if not the best, they're 'way ahead of whatever's in second place. My gears are probably quiet; but the race car is so loud, I can't tell. I think noise is probably due to the cut of the spur gears!

I need some advice. My stock 1928 Model A motor has a steady ticking coming from the #4 (rear) exhaust valve. I have taken the side plate off, stuck a temporary one only half as tall on, and idled the motor. It is definitely that exhaust valve. I can push on it with my finger and the ticking stops. My research suggests it is just a little short, and shouldn't be a critical issue, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask you guys. Thank you in advance.

    SPUR GEARS/noise, yes !
And, something else for guys to consider regarding 'spur gear' noise. If you get , say Dan McEacherns great jewelry like metal (bronze/alum cam / steel crank) gears, you can have same quiet OR noisy , by getting helical(quiet) or spur (noise). I've often heard of guys complaints of tooo much cam gear noise. If helical...old wives tale. If spur, enjoy one of the benefits of real old iron/driver interaction, eh !

*does anyone know if any other QC unit gears will fit the Kiwi QC model A unit ?
I've been looking for some used change gears to 'play' with my qc.

Is your Super Winfield iron ?
Mine is alum and 7:1 cr. I have a buddy who has a 'like new' iron Super Winfield that we've examined. It is same as mine, i.e.- 7:1.
Now if yours is diff/altered, could be higher ? Any comb chamber pics to share for evaluation ?

Derek set up the QC to take Winters 4400 series gears. Easy available with wide range of ratio sets.

derek told me his machine shop that cast the housing retired . no more product . hard to find a 101 now .

seeing as how the gears are straight cut , they will make a little noise (like a gear drive for cams) .

The head is iron. No number stamped on the pad. It has 14mm plugs. No fly cut above the piston. Tiny comp chambers I will snap a couple of pics later today when I get down to the garage.
