Hot Rods Yellow Hot Rods

  1. Three were done that way. I believe this one is out of Petaluma Ca. or somewhere up that way. Another one is maroon, but I don't know where it it, and the third one I believe was lost in a fire. All three were done in the fifties.

In 63 or 64 a friend from Placerville drove one of these deuces. His cousin Greg Schmidt's dad bought it for Greg off the Sac Autorama floor. At the time it was painted a dark blue, almost black, and was running a 327. Sadly it was rolled into a levy, totaling it. Greg lived in Knights Landing Ca.

The '56 Nomad that appeared in the TV movie "Outrage". I obsessed about the car for a long time.

If you mean that "look", maybe it was, by today's hypocritical standards. Funny, if someone found it behind a barn, still in that condition, there would be cries to "keep it as it is". And it would get the "survivor" label slapped on it. Kinda crazy how this car crap works out.

  11. No, I mean it was a victim to Hollywood. To them, it was a prop. To me, it was kick ass. Sucked that it got smashed up at the end.

The yellow and butterscotch it appears to have on/in the quarter inserts does look pretty cool from here.
I like the street freakish look too except for the scoop and pan under the front, Not sure about the wheels as I cant see em and never saw the movie but cragars slots etc etc would do it for me, Not to crazy about draglites supertricks etc on a ride like that but still couldnt not like it.
(looks a little different in the movie clips I found and looks like one color???)

  13. Maybe that's the one that I thought was lost in a fire. It was in the late 70's early 80's at Lodi that I saw the one I saw. I think the one I saw was Maroon, but it was a long time ago. That's when I was told about 3 of them being built, and one being destroyed.

Possible finished version of our 40 Willys coupe

    Hello,

In early 1960, we were finished with racing the 348/280 hp 58 Impala at the drags. We found our next project, an old 1940 Willys Coupe. We were gathering all of the ideas and parts, as money allowed, to make it go fast. The idea was a drag race car, while still being able to drive it on the street. It was perfect for the Gas Coupe/Sedan Class at Lions. At this time, the 40 Willys got a primer paint job during the whole build.

The original concept was to build it to run well first, then the finish detailing would be last on our list. So, while we were running the 6 Stromberg carb only version on the SBC, our ideas and thoughts were to meet our goal of going to the Detroit Nationals in September. The finishing ideas were now becoming a major part of our nightly discussions in the backyard garage.

My brother’s idea was to have a bright yellow coupe with all black upholstery everywhere, including the trunk. By this time, in June, we added a 671 Isky/Gilmer blower and drive kit to the SBC. Now, the e.t. and speeds were starting to be close to the national record for our class. So, the final finishing touches were to be added during August. We had to be finished prior to the drive eastward to Detroit.

In June of 2017, I was invited to come to the Price Transfer Automobilia Museum to discuss films for the opening of the Lions Dragstrip wing. In the original Price Transfer Museum, Willys Wing, there was a carbon copy of the 1960 primer version of our Willys staring me in the face. Complete with a 671 on an SBC, sitting behind the car along the wall. Goosebumps galore… instant memories…
upload_2018-2-26_3-36-2.png 671 SBC along the rear wall, black tow bar under the engine compartment on the floor, black rims, aluminum panel interior parts, etc.

As I entered the Lions Museum opening doorway, it was pretty packed with tons of old race cars. I wandered all over the display areas, including an outside hallway wing leading to the "Cackle" area. This was the area that I had a nice conversation with the author of the "So Cal Thunder" book on drag racing.
upload_2018-2-26_3-45-16.png While talking to the author, I kept noticing a bright yellow Willys over in the corner of the warehouse display wing.

So, in one day, I went from the beginning of our final Willys Coupe build, from the original primer to bright yellow finished version with new, go fast, speed stuff. (circa 1960) I had goosebumps during the whole time I was taking photos and gawking at both race cars. It was a real step back in time, 57 years later. Welcome to the “Twilight Zone.”

  22. I have an off topic red truck with yellow flames. The yellow flames will be covered with bugs, but not one bug on the red. I really like your yellow Studebaker.
