This one followed me home last year. I keep throwing parts at it until it starts to look like a car.

A current picture of my recently acquired treasures. The tub has a 59AB engine that runs great with 12V system and 40 hydraulic brakes. You can overlook that other car.;)

upload_2019-3-8_4-44-43.png Phaetons in the OC: Hot rod vs stock, you be the judge…
    Hello,

This spring, one of the events I am planning on attending, with my wife, will be a home tour in the middle of the OC. This year, our granddaughter decided that she would make plans from her busy schedule to tag along with us. My wife went last year with her sister and had a great time, despite the weather being so dang hot.

One surprise that came out of this road trip were the excellent photos of cool old cars, in all stages of builds and finishes. She liked it, that as an old hot rod guy and photographer, I told her, that her photos were very good and to the point. (compared to other advertised photos from the event.) How to score points and not even be at the hot, all day event!

There were the 1950s and 1960s hot rods with all of the cool customizing items. But there were complete old cars from the Model A coupes and sedans to RPU trucks. Each had it own distinction to keep the idea of individuality in the forefront. This old phaeton was pristine and it looked like it could have a totally hot SBC motor, with the outside being as stock as it rolled off of the assembly line in the twenties. But, as popular as that idea is, it was probably from one of the plentiful Model A clubs doing their weekend thing.

But, in the same parking lot, there were other hot rods and customs made with the latest individual touches to show the general public. So, hot rod or stock look? They were all nicely prepped and built. Those old homes in all types of shapes/customization were a throwback to the era and were quite nice according to my wife. The hot rods weren’t bad either.

The homes are moderately priced (for non upgraded homes) all the way up to the extended garages and a cool million for upgrades. Not a slouchy neighborhood, that is for sure.

I'm still working my way through this thread but wanted to post a quick photo of my unfinished tub in the meantime. Pretty much complete except for upholstery which will be done in Oxblood faux leather in the traditional wide-pleat hot rod style. Paint? Done. (Car was originally built by Bob Perreault a number of years ago, I just became the new care-taker a few weeks ago.)

This was sitting and rotting outside, I believe it's now inside and a hot rod project. A rare RHD Chrysler Grand

  22. Marty, did you sandwich the gas tank between the rear sheet metal and the rear seat upholstery? Also, what was the color choice; Ford Mustang "poppy red"?

upload_2020-11-9_4-40-2.png Jim Morris 1925 Buick Phaeton
    Hello,

Jim Morris owned a 1925 Buick Phaeton that he raced at Lions Dragstrip in So Cal. Sometimes the Phaeton was raced with the top up and sometimes, the top down. Either way, it was unusual for a drag racing hot rod. The normally street driven touring was a dual threat hot rod. That is what the early hot rods were, street driven and excels at the dragstrip. Backyard hot rodding at its best during the times.

In most of the early classes, there were RPUs, open roadsters and also some questionable street roadsters. Later on, in 1963, the Buick Phaeton was in a few magazines as a dual-purpose street/strip hot rod. The 671 powered Buick motor moved the Phaeton to fast times in both areas, drags and street.

It is unusual to say the least. The Phaeton stood out because it was not the typical street roadster and not a Ford.

There is a puzzling piece of history. The Jim Morris we knew, was in the street roadster class at Lions Dragstrip in 1959-60. It was a light turquoise blue RPU. (Buick powered, though...)

    Hello,

We have been avid readers of Archie Comic Books since we were little. Our parents bought them for us as well as Superman, Spiderman and of course Plastic Man. But, the Archie Comics were my mom’s favorite since it had little violence or destruction going on in the stories. We liked the old cars in the comic books.

Jump up many years as teenagers and now, we knew what that funny convertible was called in the Archie Comics. A phaeton… Here is an excerpt from another post on Riverdale, a modern version of Archie and his friends.

“The series takes advantage of the base story and brings it to the screen with a little pizzazz. It is set in modern times, but locked into the historic 50s-60s time period. It is not a pre teen or even for some teenager viewers as there is a lot of adult things and subjects that are not for the timid or impressionable kids. Despite being on national TV, there is violence and a lot of over the top role playing.

    upload_2020-11-10_5-56-39.png upload_2020-11-10_5-56-51.png season 3

But, as “locked in place” people, there are a lot of fun things and an intricate story line going on into this 4th season. We watched it as if it were a 19 episode long movie, one after another. The current season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down production, but the most recent episode ended with a cliffhanger. (There are 19 episodes out of 22 including the finale.)”

My brother and I started out buying a Model A coupe for our first try at making a street legal hot rod. He wanted a competitive car to go against his best friend that owned a 34 Ford 5 window with a big Olds motor. It was to be a friendly rivalry of sorts. We have always liked the Model A design.

    Jnaki

Good luck in your build and period perspective.

A Cleaner V8 version of this is what I will have when it gets done. #7 Squared if you will.

A little Jughead and a little Huey, Duey, and Louie with a touch of Class and a windshield.
